Cofused about Windows 7 a few questions!! :)
Hi MS Tech Net, A quick question for you.. since I am confused by everything... I hear tons of different answers so I figured I'd ask the makers!! I am waiting until you at least release SP1 to buy Windows 7 Ultimate.. based off the mounting issues you had with Vista when it was first released... granted I know Windows 7 is wayyy better than Vista according to all the Vista haters I know.. LOL and because I'd rather save some money for other things and wait to buy it because now that Vista is on SP2 there are like NO issues that I have.. :) Anyways, I know Windows 7 just came out, but how long after an OS release do you usually wait to release a service pack?? Also, when Vista SP1 came out I bought an OEM from Micro Center since my computer was built from scratch but I told myself that if this ever breaks I want to buy a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate so I don't have to buy a whole new copy of Vista Ultimate OEM even though it's cheaper. I have heard that if someone has an OEM copy of Windows OS' and the computer breaks (IE: becomes completely unusabe) that the OEM key deactivates and you're able to use it on a freshly built PC as long as the OLD unusable PC is not used ever again.. is that true? What is the difference between MS OEM and retail besides the fact that OEM doesn't come in that annoying box and is only usable on one computer?? Someone told me that retail can be installed on many computers as long as it's one at a time unless you purchase another license?? Lastly, I see the little diagram on the back of the Windows 7 boxes in stores, but what are the real differences between every other version and Ultimate?? I mean I know there where many differences in Vista Ultimate and the other flavors but what are they in Windows 7 Ultimate (because it is the best)?? Those little charts don't explain much!!! Someone told me no Ultimate extras.. also that unlike Vista... Windows 7 gives you the option to choose what you want to install (IE: Movie Maker, Windows Mail)... I also heard that you guys are working on trying to releasing the latest hardware drivers through Windows Update on 7 now.. so all can be installed through Windows Update.. is this true??? Thanks, LOVE YOU MICROSOFT!!

Let me answer your questions one by one.Hi MS Tech Net,A quick question for you.. since I am confused by everything... :)That is your choice. Many users that used our Beta and RC loved their experience and have already moved to Windows 7.Anyways, I know Windows 7 just came out, but how long after an OS release do you usually wait to release a service pack?? We have no timeline right now for SP 1.Also, when Vista SP1 came out I bought an OEM from Micro Center since my computer was built from scratch but I told myself that if this ever breaks I want to buy a retail copy of Windows 7 Ultimate so I don't have to buy a whole new copy of Vista Ultimate OEM even though it's cheaper.I have heard that if someone has an OEM copy of Windows OS' and the computer breaks (IE: becomes completely unusabe) that the OEM key deactivates and you're able to use it on a freshly built PC as long as the OLD unusable PC is not used ever again.. is that true? No. OEM PC's come with a recovery disc specificly built for that make and model of PC.What is the difference between MS OEM and retail besides the fact that OEM doesn't come in that annoying box and is only usable on one computer?? Off The Shelf copies of Windows can be used on any single PC. The copy that comes with your PC is for recovery purposes and is only good on that machine.Someone told me that retail can be installed on many computers as long as it's one at a time unless you purchase another license??That is not true. 1 machine per copy per license.Lastly, I see the little diagram on the back of the Windows 7 boxes in stores, but what are the real differences between every other version and Ultimate?? I mean I know there where many differences in Vista Ultimate and the other flavors but what are they in Windows 7 Ultimate (because it is the best)?? Those little charts don't explain much!!! Someone told me no Ultimate extras.. also that unlike Vista... Windows 7 gives you the option to choose what you want to install (IE: Movie Maker, Windows Mail)... I also heard that you guys are working on trying to releasing the latest hardware drivers through Windows Update on 7 now.. so all can be installed through Windows Update.. is this true???The key differences between versions is funcationality. Ultimate supports BitLocker, BitLocker to Go, Domain join, BranchCache and a full PC image backup. Home Premium does not. 1. Windows 7 is just released so we cannot confirm when SP1 will be released. Generally it will take about 1 - 2 years. 2. Computer manufacturer may not provide a full installation disk to their computer. So we can only run recovery to rebuild system. Generally OEM system cannot be installed on other computer even the same brand (but not same model). 3. As Stephen mentioned, for retail version, we will still need a new license for a new computer. 4. For the different between versions, please refer following table: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx
