Hi Malkeleah -- I'm receiving the same error message as ladireese. The message includes the following C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\gs_agent\dsc.exe I get the message when I try to open Outlook, I cannot perform a system restore nor am I able to open some other programs or access the internet. The start button has also disappeared. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks J Brit

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Dell Support Center. You don't need it and it apparently has become corrupted.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Hi Malkeleah -- When I attempted to remove the Dell Support Center I received the following message: "The windows installation service could not be accessed. This occurs if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact personnel for assistance" I'm not running windows in safe mode. Any suggestions? Thanks J Brit

There is obviously a lot more wrong with your computer than with the original poster's. Have you done the basic initial troubleshooting? The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't? The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this? Be sure the computer is clean: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware This didn't happen suddenly. What is the recent history of this computer?MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

The problems first occured Wednesday evening. I run McAfee and in the past (maybe a couple of months ago) it did alert me to a trojan which it removed. McAfee is scheduled to run a full scan on a weekly basis, last scan was Friday, April 17th and it was clean. The things that changed since Wednesday: I've been unable to access the internet or run McAfee, start bar disappeared, when I open a Word doc. it says this document cannot be registered. When I tried to remove the program you suggested I get the message I posted earlier. I appreciate your help. Thanks JBrit

Your computer is most probably infected. Go through the scanning procedures detailed in the "Removing Malware" link I already gave you. If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thank you for your efforts to help Malkeleah, however as I mentioned I'm not able to access the internet from the problem computer. At this point I'm wondering if I'd be better off just replacing the computer, it is almost 5 years old. The cost of repair may be better spent on a new computer. Any thoughts? Thanks J Brit

You need to get the malware removal tools from a different, known-clean computer with Internet access. Put the tools on a USB thumb drive or burn to CD-R. I can't answer whether it makes sense to buy a new machine. Frankly, if the computer is decent and when working well does what you want, I would clean it up and run it until it dies. But that's just me. Balance the cost of getting it fixed against buying a new computer and you make the decision. To give you an idea, I charge $100 for a clean install. So maybe my client would wind up paying that, or around $140 if they had a lot of data I needed to back up first. A new basic computer with a 20" flat panel monitor costs around $600. And of course I don't know whether you feel like cleaning up/reinstalling yourself or if you take the computer to a pro, what people in your location charge. So you'll have to make the call.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
