Try this FixIt: Error code "0x80070646," "646 ," or "1606" when you try to install Office updates http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2258121 At the bottom of JJJme's link to Windows Update KB 2492475, it says: Known issue Windows Update returns error code 646 or error code 0x80070646. blah blah blah For more information about how to resolve this issue, click... 2258121 That KB2258121 article seems very recommended at this moment. You'll even find reference to it in the right column of this page, beneath Related Topics. Visit the thread Windows Update error code 646 and find it contains a transcription of the KB article's instructions. Those instructions have apparently helped solve the problem for 25 newcomers to this forum, who, each and every one of them, all expressed delight. You can tell they're newcomers, because they don't have any medals. Not one of them. Perhaps that is the reason none of them gave any details about why it worked. Not a hint about what was wrong, or any curiosity about how it got that way. It sure would be helpful to know what that corrupted content is, which KB2258121 fixes so well. How about it, JJJme. Will you let us know?

KB2258121 identifies precisely where the corruption is, in the "Let me fix it myself" section. An incorrect registry setting. Robin Walker Wouldn't it be useful to know what all these people are finding there in those polluted registry entries? Wouldn't it be useful to learn how/why it's happening? That precise HKLM reference in Step 8 does not seem applicable. Doesn't it seem odd that 25 newcomers all converged there to give testimonials of this miracle cure? Yet with all that rejoiceful enthusiasm, not a single one mentioned what they actually found?

derosnec, I found in my WinVista registry at the location described in the KB article the following: %APPDATA% The KB article 2258121 describes how to change this value to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming which seems to be the sort of place where Windows Vista puts information gathered from "outside" your computer, usually via the internet or other network.

Thanks! It seems like it should work out to be the same thing. %USERPROFILE% = C:\Users\you %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming = C:\Users\you\AppData\Roaming %APPDATA%= C:\Users\you\AppData\Roaming It looks like it wouldn't make a difference. But there's some funny issue with $APPDATA% expansion. That's what Gumby's thread is discussing. Here's a KB article about it - support.microsoft.com/kb/329308. Which of the three registry branches did you find that in? HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT or HKCU or HKLM. I think if it's in the .DEFAULT location, then it was set that way from the factory. In that case, every user profile you create will end up just like that. On the other hand, if it's in the HKCU branch, then I'd be kind of concerned to figure out what program changed it to %APPDATA%.

So it looks like it wouldn't make a difference. But there's some funny issue with $APPDATA% expansion. That's what Gumby's thread is discussing.
