Client refuses to Install Adobe Flash IE security updates

This is a standalone client . No domain . Windows 8.1 . Since a few months the windows updates from adobe flash player for IE fail . We were hiding the failing package at first , but without the security updates it seems there is no way to watch flash in IE anymore . The currently failing package is KB3004150 . Downloading and installing the update(s) manually fail (for example the latest package gives : "the following updates were not installed : Update for windows (KB3004150)"

Hello Danny8,

Have you made any change before this issue?
Do you have other update issues?

I will do more research on the CBS.log, it may take some times.

Please take a look at the following article about troubleshooting problems with installing updates.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/troubleshoot-problems-installing-updates#1TC=windows-8
Check the if we have enough space, if not run Disk Cleanup

Thank you for taking the time to look into this issue .

"Have you made any change before this issue?"

This particular issue is going on for a few months already . I have no idea if something happened right before the issue popped up , sorry .

"Do you have other update issues?"

No other update issues .

I had checked the link already before . in particular :
- I tried to install updates but one or more wasn't installed.
- I keep being offered an update from Windows that I don't want or I already removed.
- I hid an update and now I want to install it.
- I keep getting prompted to restart my PC to finish installing updates.

We were hiding the update , to wait for the next update(s) to see if they would install . The result is negative . None of these links really fix the issue . Another reason why we were hiding the passed flash updates : this particular client can't be normally rebooted . It always sais "update and restart" because of the failing flash update . Then tries to install the update and always fails .

If I should run other commands in order to get to the bottom of this , don't hesitate to ask . Your help is much appreciated !

The client is protected by Microsoft Windows Defender and Malwarebtytes Anti malware . Full scans show the pc is clean .

The PC is connected to a UPS , so improper shutdowns are very unlikely to happen .

Regarding the diskspace : it has more than 100Gbyte free on the windows partition .

Hello Danny8_,

When you run the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth , we will get the error message The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.Error: 0x800f081f.
Based on my research, the command fails because the files were not available on Windows Updates.
For more information, please refer to the following article.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/olivnie/archive/2013/04/05/updates-and-maintenance.aspx

We could use the command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows /LimitAccess to repair image by using your own sources.

Hello Danny8_,

As you got the error message The source files could not be found.Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required t
o restore the feature. when you use the dism command, it seems that the source is not correctly configured.

Please double check if you have correctly configure a Windows Repair Source.

Hello ,

Thank you for your patience . I have read that article you linked me to again . I can see your repair works in the screenshot . So I am trying it exactly as you are doing it (linking directly to the iso file on my desktop) .

C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:"C:\Users
\Administrator\Desktop\Windows8_Pro.iso" /LimitAccess

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

Then , I try another way as told in the article : "share a windows directory from another machine in the same network" . They are both Windows 8.1 PRO 64bit (NO oem versions) .

C:\WINDOWS\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\\laptop-hp\windows /LimitAccess Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool Version: 6.3.9600.17031 Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031 [==========================100.0%==========================] Error: 0x800f081f The source files could not be found. What could be causing this failure to repair ? Maybe the error message we are getting is misleading us ?

Thank you for joining in dusja . I have tried your advice and disabled all non-MS services and tasks as per the link you provided . Disabling was fast , re-enabling the right services again took me quite a bit longer .

The output of Dism did not change however (see above) .

Error: 0x800f081f)

I again tried both ways (local ISO on the desktop and a shared windows directory from another machine in the same network) .

What's the next thing to try and solve this issue .

Find an .msu file which satisfies the missing modules, download it and expand it; then give that to DISM as source.  I don't think DISM is smart enough to unpack an .iso on its own; however, it would be an interesting experiment I suppose to see if it would try to make something of an .msu file without you unpacking it.

BTW if you have the latest CBS.log and put it on your OneDrive I would have a look at it.  I didn't look at the YADISK thing because I was put off by the Owner: criminala declaration--not to mention that I don't read Russian.   ; )

In any case, unless there is some helpful lookup that I am unaware of the only way that I have found so far to know which package to try to provide for source is by getting the associated CBS.log items which do provide that clue.

BTW those module names look familiar.  Someone in Answers is having a problem with Time and Date...

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-system/unable-to-find-date-and-time-in-windows-81/384e9f70-65a2-48db-8bef-96deab61edd5?page=2

I guess I must be remembering something that I saw in that poster's CBS.log via the DropBox link.  Nevertheless my comments there will be relevant to your case too.

Robert , thank you for taking the time to look into this issue . Altough I'm very confused by your answer .

The ones you provided in your above post seem to be from someone elses log ?

I have also looked at the thread you linked me to . I can't see any similarities between his problem , unless I'm really overlooking something . His DISM error is different from mine (mine is 0x800f081f) . My date and time are all fine . He doesn't seem to have problems with flash . His corrupted payloads are completely different from mine , etc .

Concerning Yandex : I don't speak Russian either . But the button on the right side that sais "download" (language depends on your windows settings) is pretty self-explanatory . The file to be downloaded is a .log file , no .exe which you can scan with your prefered virusscanner after downloading .

Looks like it.  Don't know how that happened.

I do know of someone else who has DISM telling him that Flash is corrupt but we don't think that DISM understands his real problem.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_update/update-kb3000850-fails-to-install/43125206-f39e-477f-b5b6-73a177abb589?page=2

Oh.  It looks like it was SFC which was giving him the CheckSUR report.

Have you tried SFC?

In fact, recently someone apparently got going with SFC and then DISM.

Looks like our reporting and repair tools are not quite as precise or complete as we would wish them to be.   ; }

Thank you for your answer and I appreciate the fact you're trying to help .

But , I started my first post with

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

followed by the appropriate logfiles .

Now you ask me if I have tried these commands and link me to a post that holds the answer with the exact same commands .

To be clear : It does not fix anything .

As of now the old updates are superseded and KB3021953 is up for install (IE flash player update) . still fails with the same error as before (code 80073712) .

More than that.  They both contain examples of the diagnostic procedures that I suggest when trying to understand WinSxS corruption.  The one with Flash symptoms like yours had another issue but while we were diagnosing the Flash symptom it could be relevant for your case at least for comparison purposes.  Yours like his seems to be concerned with ensuring the integrity of obsolete modules.  E.g. if you check on the state of your Flash modules I think you will probably find that you have a more recent version in effect.

In fact, I don't even have that 17221 build version nor know where to get it.  This is an example of how much we need the old DLL Help Database back again when trying to do self-support.  But that could be your objective for solving that part.  E.g. find an .msu file to download which contains all the .dll .manifest etc. files, unpack it and then point DISM at that unpacked directory as its /source: operand.  Hopefully by concentrating on fixing the "missing payload" symptom you would also get a fix for the other corruption but who knows?

In fact, I think I also made the suggestion to think about uninstalling any extra Flash support the poster might have had because presumably doing that could be another way of fixing the corruption--eliminating the perception of something being needed.  Etc.

The other corruption you have also has one related to Flash but I can't tell if it is related to your missing payload.  Judging by the File Version in the File Information section it is really old, e.g. version 14.0.0.145  but there are so many inconsistencies these days in both version information and creation date that the only thing that I go by is Length.

Therefore, if you would like more help from me please try the PowerShell pipleline with Flash.ocx as a representative module name.  In case there are some occurrences of it outside WinDir I suggest starting at the root.

Here is an example syntax for your convenience.  Navigate to the root and Paste (or type) the bolded part and then press Enter.

PS C:\> LS -Re -Fi flash.ocx | sort LastWriteTime | ft Length, FullName -AutoSize
