Client deployment problems

Hey there,

I have just provisioned a Lync 2010 instance and started trying to deploy my clients, I want to use SCCM to achieve this process,

I have tried a couple of methods, calling the ocsetup directly or using a msi file with either the transform or the documented registry key,

The problem I am having is every time I launch Lync client after the installation I get a "Please wait while windows configures Microsoft Lync 2010", the box is very similar to that which one would see when running a MSI installer in visible mode,

I am trying to install onto Windows 7 Enterprise and have tried multiple systems with no luck.

This problem is causing non-administrators to not be able to launch the program as they don't have access to the installation sources. Not sure where I have gone wrong, I have NOT had Office Communicator installed in the past, so it shouldn't be this type of issue.

Thanks for your help on this problems

Hi, youngpro,

As your description, the problem just happened when you launch the client. All the clients face the same issue or it’s a individual case?

   Some suggestions for you.

1.        Please check System Requirements, Compatibility.

2.        Please refer to Deploying Lync 2010.

3.        Please refer to KB2477965 which is about the installation of Lync 2010 by using Windows Installer (MSI) fails.

Above all, hope useful.

Thanks mate

Yeah I have deployed to 3 test clients and they all face the same issue. The issue also occurs when I use the normal installer as opposed to the msi deployment.

I think this problem is a little deeper than not deploying the msi correctly, as even if i use the ocsetup.exe I recieve the same issue on my clients. That issue being a msi style installer coming up every time the application is launched. I have below linked a copy of the screen I see everytime I launch lync.

Hi, youngpro,

I’ve seen the picture. Any progress now?

After gathering required information, the client was launched normal or not?

   Here’re some other tips.

1.        Please check if you’ve installed Windows Search.

2.        Uninstall the lync client completely from computer and install it again with administrator permission.

Then try to launch the client again. Let’s check.

Hi there,

the lync.msi package only installs the lync client files, if you attempt to launch the client after installation it will automatically search for sliverlight and if it is not installed it will point you directly to the website to download it.

where the exe file used with /slient /install switches will install lync client files, silverlight and visual studio resdistributable package, after installation the client will be automatically launched and the MSI installer will not appear.

thanks guys,

i have tried both, what I actually do as part of my installer is install silverlight, visual studio redist packages first, then the msi,

but i have tried the ocsetup on its own and i still get this problem,

if a user simply logs in to a system, lync launches and runs fine, but if for some reason it is closed and reopened, it displays the image as above...

Hi

Could you please elaborate on that? We do have sort of the same problem. Lync does do the Windows Installer stuff on every "manual" run, but it does complete. The problem however is that we have MUI installed, and it defaults to German, and after a manual run, it is set back to english... :(

Thanks & Cheers

HI again ;)

That pointed me to the right direction. For others to resolve the problem:

- In Eventlog, there is Event ID 1004 from Source "MsiInstaller", which does not find ressource "C:\OCSSETUPDIR\"
- If you create that directory, Lync does not configure itself trough Windows Installer anymore
- I was able to change the directory to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Lync" and not having to create that C:\OCSSETUPDIR then, by changing the registry:

- Key: CBF94811614C24742897713C2A8CF527
- Path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\C7376A18AE70EB645A6EA7E5F5CE44F9

Hope that helps...

Cheers

Almost a year after your post I faced the same issue and luckily found your workaround. It did the trick!

Thanks Michel.

I experienced the exact same problem.  In my case, the C:\OCSETUPDIR already existed, but the registry entry pointed to F: (for me, an external drive).  Changing the reg entry from F: to C: resolved the problem.  Thanks!  Now I can preserve what little hair I have left.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  This problems was driving me crazy.  Lesson learned... never delete a directory just because it's empty and doesn't appear to be used for anything.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

This has been driving me nuts. It's not 100% consistent, as it will open on certain machines but this seems to have solved it for the rest!

Best thing to happen on a Monday in a while!

Thanks for the help. I just had this same problem. Creating the OCSSETUPDIR directory fixed.

This has worked for me even though the key did not match, but I'm unable to vote foras the button is grayed out. May be because this thread is already marked answered. Re
