Chkdsk /r taking an incredibly long time
Hi, i recently dropped my laptop causing it to instantly Blue Screen, when i rebooted it again blue screened producing an "un-mountable_boot_volume" error with the code STOP: 0x000000ED.I ran the startup repair which again caused a blue screen of death. So, after trying all i could, i decided to perform a chkdsk /r on it. It has now been running for over 36 hours, and its only on stage 4 (25 Percent complete. (41967 of 263664 files processed)Is this normal? How much longer could it take? Should i just give up, bite the bullet and buy a new HDD? (i realy dont want to have to do this, as my backup is at university and i am home for the holidays >_<! )Specifications:240GB HDD4GB RamDuel core prcessor 2.2GHz

If you dropped the laptop while it was on, it may have been more than it could take as to the shock. That isn't normal for it to run that long. But try this first, Remove the hard drive and reseat it. If you've already done that then I'm afraid its toast. However all may not be lost if you have a hard drive docking station that you could use to extract data from it or even further test it from it (on another computer). Did your laptop come with a diagnostic CD? I'd run that to check your laptop for other damages that may not be apparent - but do reseat all devices and memory chips, wireless, etc. Don't leave anything to guess. Even laptop hard drives are cheap nowadays (except if you're on a budget), but hey, you've got to be gentle and careful unless you have a ruggerized laptop like a Dell ATG ;-)MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. I thought as much, luckly i do happen to have a spare HDD lying around looks like im just going to have to start from scratch. And no, my laptop didn't come with a diagnostic CD, acer apparently dont want to spend the 1p (if its even that much) to burn a standard recovery CD that im almost certain every other company supplies with their computers. Instead its "on a hidden partition of the hdd" (Did they not think what people would do if something like this happend?) Ohhh well, Thankyou for your reply :)

Are you saying you already have that Acer Recovery software? Carey's just giving you one more option as some OEM's will still sell a unit without recovery built into the system or supply you with a recovery CD (unless you paid for it at time of purchase or otherwise. So be professional now ;-) we try to help whenever we can - I try but some posts I just plain skip when they don't make clear what the problem is :( I guess enough as it is but I manage but its all a learning experience - even criticism - to a point :)MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Update: from pure curiosity (Since i noticed some system files had been repared) i booted from the HDD, it didn't BSOD where it usualy did, instead it ran the standard chkdsk its self, and its now running again The files it repared must of been enough to get it booted up again :)!

Acer may have provided a way to create a backup CD/DVD for that Laptop. Look in Start / All Programs. If so, do it now while it's working. Also, backup your data as It's quite likely the drive will die soon.Rich

Very good, but I agree with Ztruker and if you'll make a full backup with system image (as long as its fully functional now) you'll have a good spot to recover from if you have to put in a new drive. When I put a new larger drive in my wife's laptop, she didn't have a clue anything had changed. Only problem I had was the repair cd didn't work, but putting in the dvd and recovering from there did the job in less than 30 minutes which included a reboot (it prompted me once I logged into my domain). Now I like it as good if not better than Ghost (which I really love in my work domain environment). Good luck with your machine and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you as well.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message.
