Changing which machine Windows 7 is registered to - possible?
I recently installed Windows 7, for fun, on my laptop. It didn't work so hot, and I'm currently restoring my linux installation. Then I tried installing it on another desktop I have...and after installation, it won't activate. Did a little bit of reading, apparently Windows 7 registers/assigns itself to whatever machine you install it to. That kinda stinks. Is there any way to fix this? To reset it so that I can install it on the machine I'll actually be using it on? Do I just need to call Microsoft or some such?

If you can meet the liscence requirements for your copy of Windows 7, then you can use the phone method to activate your copy. For example if you have a full (non upgrade) version of Windows 7 or if you have an upgade version and the computer you installed it on meets the upgrade requirements, then you probably meet the liscence requirements. Also you must not have a copy still remaining on any other computer that you previously installed onto.

Hi, If this is a full version of Windows 7, you may run SLUI 4.exe, select your nearest location and call the number (Microsoft Activation Center) on the page to re-activate it. If this is an upgrade version of Windows 7, you need to install a previous version of Microsoft Windows operating system and upgrade to Windows 7, then repeat the above steps to re-activate it. Of course, you may also purchase a full version of Windows 7 product key. Regards, Arthur Li - MSFT
