Changing USB port = new network adapter, annoying!
Here's an annoyance I thought I'd share. I had to get a USB Wi-Fi adapter (a Belkin in this case) to replace a malfunctioning internal Wi-Fi adapter. The install instructions said to insert the CD, install the drivers, and then install the device when prompted. So I insert the CD in my Windows 7 installation, the driver installs, and it asks me to plug in the adapter. I plug it in to the back of my laptop, and it installs fine. I then go through and set up my Wi-Fi connection settings, because although I had already set them up on the internal adapter (which has since been removed), apparently Win7 ties those settings to the adapter, and I have to set up the settings on this new adapter. Now, I figure I should install the adapter on my Vista partition as well before I put the CD away. Since I'm supposed to install the driver first, I pull out the USB stick first. Then I go through the process again, and everything's all hunky-dory in Vista. Now I reboot into Windows 7 again. It has detected the adapter, but surprise, it has no Wi-Fi settings associated to it! I pull up the Network and Settings Center (or whatever it's called), and I find I'm looking at Belkin USB Wi-Fi Adapter #2. Apparently, when installing it in Vista and plugging it into one of the two side-by-side USB ports on the back of my laptop, I plugged it into the other one, the one opposite to the one I used when first installing it in Windows 7. Even though this was the exact same piece of hardware with the exact same MAC address on the exact same USB bus, Windows 7 identified it as an entirely different network adapter and therefore didn't match the stored Wi-Fi settings to it. Granted, it's tough for me to come up with a realistic situation where I wouldn't just be able to move the adapter to the other USB port (except maybe if I'm in a spot where a 4" stick protruding from the back is just really not appropriate and I would need to use the side port instead), but it's still annoying.
