Changes are made to a file and saved, but upon reopening the file is blank
I've got two labs of Windows 7 PCs on in a Server 2003 environment. One doesn't seem to be having this issue, the other does. Students have saved files with changes but when opening a day, or hours later, the file is there but blank. At first I thought it was isolated to the AutoCAD software and documents, but then today it happened with a PowerPoint file. It appears that in both cases, the size of the file seems accurate. But again, no changes were saved, just an empty file. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

And by the way, they're saving to their individual network folders. Individual sub folder on a network share. Mapped as their home directory.

Hi benben4683, Is this a reproduced issue or random one? If you save the file locally, does it work? Change another network folder, what's the result? Does it happen to all file or some specific type of files? Please temporarily turn off the firewall/anti-virus problem, then Clean Boot the Windows 7 client, then save a file to the network share to check the result. I can't reproduce the issue, but it was recurring for about a third of the students in one particular class hour. I don't have the issue with another hour of the same class or any other classes using the computers or software. It's happened with AutoCAD dwg files repeatedly and with a PowerPoint pptx file once. To try to stop the loss of work I asked them to save twice, once over their existing work and again to a new file. When they did that, both files always work. If it continues I will try turning off Sophos and doing a clean boot. Ben

I know this may sound silly, but since you mentioned 'students', and as a student this is what we do - just for fun, we edit/delete files of other students or sometimes our own files in the lab so that we can complain about this to the lab in-charge and get some free time. To be a little more mischievous we also change the font color to white to match the background, making the file 'look' empty (which explains the file size being accurate).. :) Are the folders where the students save the files accessible by multiple users? Please revert back here for us to be able to assist you further, thanks! Kunal D Mehta - a Windows Server Enthusiast | My first TechNet Wiki Article
