Change Power Button Behavior for Default Users
Hello Everyone, I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise. By default, the OS has the physical power button on our laptops configured to put the laptop in sleep mode. I want the power button to, by default, shut down the laptop instead. I can easily configure the power button to shut down instead of sleep for one profile (in the control panel), but I'm looking for an effective way to configure the power button to shut down by default. 1. If I use group policy to configure the button, it isn't allowing the users to change the power button settings should they want to change it later. I'm trying to give users the ability to choose the power button behavior, I just want it to default to "shut down" 2. I could also configure a login script to configure the power button for all users, but if a user changes their power button behavior in the future, the next time they login it will revert back to the setting in the script. I'm trying to give users the choice. Any ideas on how to change the power button behavior on my laptops to default to "shut down" without removing users' ability to configure it later? Thank you, -Mike

Why don't you give a try to "Group Policy Preferences". I think you can easyly accomplish what you want to do with "Group Policy Preferences". You can get the detailed documentation for "Group Policy Preferences" from the following link. I personally never tried what you are trying to do but I know it's possible... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=42e30e3f-6f01-4610-9d6e-f6e0fb7a0790 (I copied this part from the linked document) "Power Options Use the Power Options preference item to configure power options and power schemes for computers running Windows XP. Power options include settings like what happens when users close the lid on their mobile PCs. Power schemes include timings for when Windows turns of the monitor and hard disks and when the operating system puts the computer to sleep or hibernation. Although Windows Vista supports power options settings in Group Policy, those settings are strictly enforced. By configuring power options using the Power Options extension, you can create a default configuration that users can later change as necessary."Kubilay Elmas

Hello Kubilayelmas, I had never used group policy preferences before. I see that it will do EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Unfortuantely, we are still STUCK with Windows Server 2003 domain controllers which makes me really sad. So I don't have the easy functionality that you describe. So as a somewhat workaround, I created a small script using powercfg.exe which is built into Windows 7. 1. I manually created a Power Profile and exported it using the powercfg.exe command. I then put the power profile on my server. 2. I created a small script that copied the profile to the local machine, imported the profile to the local machine and then set the new power profile as active. My script then deleted the locally copied power profile. This "dirty" method will hold me for now until we get some REAL DC's up at my office :) Thank you for your input.
