Change Network Display name
Hi, I recently changed Wireless ADSL routers. Used the same SSID as the previous router. When this displays in the Network Sharing Center, " 2" is appended. Is there anyway to remove this? Have looked all over the place and can't seem to find out how. Clicking the Network tray icon, "Currently connected to:" displays with the " 2", "Wireless Network Connection" displays without it. Thanx

When a network is first detected by Windows 7, it sets the name of the Network Profile in the Registry. If a profile with the same SSID already exists, Windows 7 will create a new profile with the same name and a 2 after it. I don't know why this is though or what factor determines this though. You can remove the profile by editing the Registry and reassociate with the SSID to fix this issue. 1. Open Registry Editor 2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles 3. In this list is this SID Key for each of the Network Profiles on your machine. Look at each one and find the profile whose Description string value matches your SSID. There will be two different SID Keys with your description string, one for the inital SSID and another for "SSID 2". 4. Delete the entire folder (Key) containing the SSID network. 5. Restart your computer When you boot back up, you will have to reassociate with your network. It should now identify as SSID instead of SSID 2. If this doesnt make sense, let me know and I'll include screenshots.
