Cant set use pin as default sign in

Hi,

I haven't been able to use a pin as a default sign-in on my computer since bought two months ago. Can use it, but first it brings up password, then have to click sign-in options, then pin. Of course, these extra steps pretty much defeat the advantage of using a pin.

Have been through the usual routes of trouble-shooting this problem, remove pin, re-set up, restart, etc. The next step suggested was a complete restore/reinstall, which seemed pretty drastic for a little glitch and would require me to reinstall all my programs etc. I've spent the last month getting set up.

So I went down to Windows store in mall and a "tech" there went through all the exact same trouble-shooting options I did. And said next is major restore/reset.

Is this the only way to try to fix stuff win8? Anybody have a less drastic solution?

(By the way I'm not on a domain server)

Thanks,

Mark

did you attempted to put the wrong pin before this issue happen?

did you setup user password after you setup the pin?

I suggest remove the pin, restart Credential Manager service and set to be Automatic and started (running), create the pin and login back

or try with different user to test with different local account

Hi britishdhez, thanks for reply

1- I don't believe I put wrong pin in before this happened, it has always allowed me to sign in using pin once I go through additional clicks to open pin box as originally stated. but cant be 100% sure, was weeks ago.

2- No. password was setup before pin setup.

3- I don't know which Credential service you are referring to, or how to restart. When I do a google search for guidance, I come up with "IE Credential Manager", and other unclear results. Although, I have tried removing pin, rebooted computer, re-create pin and then reboot again.

4- Have tried adding a new user and create pin. does same thing, won't bring-up pin as first/default sign in.

Hi again,

Since last night I have now found Credential Manager in Control Panel. But can see no way to "restart" or "make automatic" as suggested. Nor can I find any kind of directive on the web for that operation.

Could you describe a little bit more detail the action you are referring to?

Thanks,

Mark

Ok thanks,

That was easy and clear. Problem still there though.

Removed pin, restarted Credential Manager and set to Automatic as per your instruction. Created pin, logged back in using pin, still have to click sign-in options, and then pin to get a pin box, then put in pin. Tried twice.

Probably too small of a glitch for Microsoft to bother with in an OS that is already being replaced. I will try to invent a much easier main password as a work-around.

Thanks for help.

I have updated information that this Pin only work with local account, but not with Microsoft account. Did you try with local account?

my last bet, some user (Windows 10 build 10041) reported this can be repair PIN

go to: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC

  1. Delete everything within that folder
  2. Go to Settings-> Accounts->Sign-in Options
  3. Click Add a PIN again and set your PIN
  4. restart PC

Not sure how I'd set up a local account. It seemed pretty necessary to set up with a newly created Microsoft account as I went through the set-up process. I will research, as it worries me that my only way into my account is through some kind of Microsoft cloud that I know nothing about. They seem to have really gone overboard with passwords and security in Win 8. But then I've never been hacked, I might feel different...  But I worry more about losing track of my passwords and sign-in names etc. than getting hacked. Sorry, rambling...

Meantime, good news: just for fun, as it was almost useless last new computer 4 years ago, I enabled face sign-in. It actually works if I am sitting in the same spot with good lighting, not really consistent enough to use on a regular basis. After the first fail, I brought up the pin sign-in box and now it comes up as my default sign-in. Pretty round about, weird fix, but I'll take it.

Thanks so much for your time and help on this. I will mark it as answered in case anyone else runs into this.
