Cant connect to Windows Update, Msn Messager and Msn.com PLEASE HELP
I am in the process of updating our computers at work. I have setup a new PD 3.4GHZ Computer with 1GB RAM and an Intel 10/100- 1000 network card. I am on a domain with 12 other computers that are running XP. The computer in question is running Windows Vista 32 bit Business addition. We are using the 3com OfficeConnect firewall. The problem that I am having is I cannot connect to Windows Update, MSN.com and MSN Massager service from the vista machine. Nor can I register any of the Microsoft software online. I have tried all of the troubleshooting steps and can connect to other websites other than the ones mention above. In addition, the other XP machines located on the network, behind the same firewall, CAN connect to these sites. Anyone know what I can do??? Thank You, Ryan http://www.arizonatrailways.com WINDOWS UPDATE & MSN MESSANGER ERROR CODE IS 80072EFD

Still no reply and I am still having the problem. This has to be a problem with Vista as all other computers do not have this issue. I am going to try and take back the software. If they dont give me a refund, I will dispute the charges as the product is defective.

Error code 80072efd usually occurs when there is a problem with the .NET Messenger service. one or more of the servers providing it might be down or having problems, with as result that you can no longer sign in. This normally won't take longer then a few minutes/hours. For more information you can check the .NET Messenger Service Status Other steps that might help If there are no reported problems with the Messenger servers, see if your proxy settings are correct: click "Tools" and then "Options" at your Messenger main window. In the options screen click "Connection" in the list to the left. Next, click the "Advanced Settings..." button. If you (likely) do not use a proxy server, try unchecking all the checkboxes except for the one labeled TCP and see if you can connect now. (You might have to fully close and start Messenger again before retrying to connect). If you are on a large network, the network administrator can probably tell you if you should have proxy settings in Messenger. In Internet Explorer: click Tools, then Internet Options, select the "connections" tab. Try unchecking (if checked) "Use a proxy server for LAN" and check "Automatically detect settings". This should enable both Internet Explorer and Messenger to automatically find the best way to connect to the internet. If the error continues to appear it is most likely because the Windows digital signatures system is damaged or corrupt. To resolve this you will have to register several dll files that are required for Messenger. You can do this automatically by running a batch file we created or if you prefer by executing the commands yourself. Manual solution First open a run window by clicking start, then run. Now, type the following command and press enter: regsvr32 softpub.dll Wintrust.dll Initpki.dll Rsaenh.dll Mssip32.dll Cryptdlg.dll Then open a new Run Window and type this command line and press enter: regsvr32 Dssenh.dll Gpkcsp.dll Slbcsp.dll Sccbase.dll Hope it works. Good luck

Thanks for the reply ahmhdy, but this issue is much deeper than Messanger. The problem has to do with how Vista reacts with our route or DNS server as I cannot access windows update either through the program or update.microsoft.com. Nor can I access MSN Messager or activate or update office products as well. Other XP computers can access all of these services and are connected to the same router. Like I said before I have exausted my resources so I do not see how Vista will be a good fit for our company. I am now looking at other alternatives. Regards,Ryan

Your router is not compaitable with Windows Vista.

That is unfortunate. I thought network language was universal. What routers does windows vista recommend?

Did you get an answer? I have tried to get this to work. I do not believe that a Cisco Router 2600 series would know if I am using Linux, Unix, Windows, or Mac. It works at the 3rd level of OSI, not the application of software.

Try this: click on "windows update/change settings" and uncheck "use microsoft update" and see if that helps.

Hey. Old thread I know, but I had the same problem today and it turned out to be due to my computer clock being reset to 2007 or something. I set it to the correct date and time and everything started working again. :)
