Cannot verify digital signature of taskmanager.

Hi,

I have a problem using task manager, It won't start.

After searching on the web for a while I found another way to open it than CTRL + ALT + Delete or CTRL + Shift + Esc. using the Cmd run command It gave me this error:

C:\windows\system32\taskmgr.exe

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.

Recently I installed a custom theme for windows wich might have messed it up a bit. How can I restore this?

thanks,

Keyword is "A third party theme"

It depends what that "Third party theme" does and where it installs, etc.

But how can I repear it? Seems to me the theme damaged the taskmanager. I don't think simply unistalling the theme will fix the issue.

In order to know how go fix it , we need to know what broke it. What is this theme you installed. Where did you download it from. Since a theme is not supposed to break the task manager, that info is important because I think you may be dealing with a malware.

I got the theme from a deviant art post, This account is new so I can't post any links to the thread. Basically the theme had a tutorial on how to install with it and required placing a .theme and .msstyles along with some folders with images and fonts in "C:\Windows\Resources\Themes" after that I needed to run the program "Uxstyle" to allow the theme to customise windows. The installation of the theme failed and I tried using another program called "universal theme patcher". The installation failed again but it still changed some elements.

I have looked up both programs and they don't seem to be malware (ofcourse I don't know what's in the theme). I also tried scanning my computer with malwarebytes and avast. Both came back with zero results.

What now? Thanks for your help.

Now! uninstall all the above, if you are sure that is what caused.

If this does not work, you can try to restore to a previous date, before the changes. using windows restore.

An if that does not do it, try installing the OS again.  Choose to keep files and programs, and you would not loos anything.

I'm not sure it caused it. My guess is that the failed instalation of the theme corrupted some files. I can't find any sources that say that these programs are infected.

I might still try to restore my pc to a previous point or reinstall like you suggested. Thanks for the help :)
