Cannot troubleshoot connection
I did a clean install of 7 Ultimate 32bit a few days ago. Today when I started the computer, the network icon in the system tray has a red X through it and it says "no connections are available". When I open the Network and Sharing Center, at the top it says "Unknown" and "The dependency service or group failed to start.". When I click on "Troubleshoot problems" and select any of the options, I get an error message stating "A problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting." Under "view error details" the error code is 0x80070426. Actually, I am connected to the internet, and when I open a browser, everything seems to be working just fine. This machine is part of a Homegroup, and it shows up in Explorer on my laptop but the laptop does not show up on the desktop (the one in question) as part of the homegroup, but does show up under network. The Homegroup problem is not new. I have been unable to turn on "network discovery" and "file and printer sharing" on this machine since this install of windows 7. I have tried restoring to yesterday when things were working fine, and I've disabled anti-virus and firewall, but still it indicates "no connection available" (even though it really is connected). In Task Manager under networking, the state of the Local Area Connection is listed as "Connected". I tried uninstalling a couple of updates that occurred overnight, but when that had no effect, I tried to reinstall them, but one (KB971033) fails to install, and I'm given the same error code (80070426) as when I try to run the network troubleshooter. Any ideas? Update: I don't know what changed, but I am now able to turn on Network Discovery. Still unable to turn on File and Printer Sharing. Still indicating "Not Connected-No Connections Are Available" despite being connected, and still unable to troubleshoot connection or see other computers in Homegroup.

the error code (80070426) indicates an issue with the activation service. Please verify the service is running, Windows is genuine and activated. The file and printer sharing not working (and some other things you mention) might indicate an issue with the "server" service. Verify it is running and start it if not. If the computer itself has also troubles connecting to network resources, also check the "workstation" service.

This issue can be caused by several reasons. I suggest you temporary disable the antivirus and then check the result. If the issue persists, I suspect that the network adapter driver is not compatible with Windows 7. Please try to find Windows 7 compatible driver from Internet and then install it. Did you run any Registry cleaner or system optimizing tools after installing the system? If so, I suspect that related Registry keys are deleted by the programs by mistake. If the issue persists after you install the Windows 7 compatible network adapter driver, please run In-place Upgrade to repair the system. Your personal data and installed programs will not be removed during the repair. However I still recommend that you backup important data before running In-place Upgrade.Arthur Xie - MSFT
