Cannot transfer large files from Win7 to XP
So I have a laptop running Win7, on wireless, transferring large 500mb files to WinXP machine, connected Ethernet, to a wireless router. Midway through transferring the file, Win7 drops the connection for some reason. I can't use the Internet on the Win7 laptop or do anything network related. WinXP machine is still online because I can still access it from other machines. To fix the Win7 laptop, I have to disconnect and reconnect to my network. In the end I can't transfer the files at all. Any clues to what I can do to figure this out? Small files work fine. I know transferring the files over Ethernet will be fine (I think) because I have run a backup of the laptop to a different computer also running XP, and it worked fine, but this was Ethernet to Router to Ethernet connection. Thanks, - Eli

Hello, First, I would like to confirm whether you can transfer large files from the Windows XP machine to Windows 7 laptop. At this stage, let's test the issue via following steps: 1. Temporarily turn off the firewall on both computers and router (if it has firewall) to check the result. 2. Since the Windows 7 computer connects to the network wirelessly, I suggest we change the connection with a network cable and transfer the large file for a test again. 3. Please change the Power settings. a. Click Start menu and open Control Panel. b. Double click the Power Options. c. In selected "Preferred plans", please click "Change plan settings". d. Set the "Put the computer to sleep" to "never" option and save the settings. 4. The issue may also be related to the NIC on the Windows 7 computer and the router. Please upgrade the NIC driver and the router's firmware. If issue still occurs, please transfer a large file and perform following steps to capture a log file. Collect the Netmon trace ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to download the large file. When it failed, go to step 7. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak
