Cannot share printer because PC is not found on network..
Good Afternoon, I have a small network (110 workstations) all running Windows 7 32 bit version on it. One of the machines has a local printer connected to it and is set to be shared amongst this user's secretary by using the computer name (\\computername\printername). However everytime I try to set this printer up on the secretary's machine it fails. So I then try to access the machine by simply typing \\computername in the little search box to bring up the machines remote printers and I get the following error message: \\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect. Does anyone have any idea on how I can resolve this? Thank you in advance.

1. For workgroup are names local, so the secretary account is known on the "print server" computer, unless you work in AD environement. 2. Depending ion type of printer (and its configuration) you need to open some ports. 3. You can catch the communication and analyze it if 1&2 fail. Regards Milos

Hello Mikey, Open Internet Explorer (must be IE) and in the URL bar type \\ipaddress of the computer and see if the share comes up. Then try \\computername and see if the share comes up. lemme know the results please.Miguel Fra | Falcon IT Services, Miami, FL www.falconitservices.com | www.falconits.com | Blog

Hey Milos, thank you for your response. We are on a domain in a AD environment. However the Domain Controller is a very old server. Its a Windows 2000 server if that helps? The printer is an HP LaserJet 4250 which is easy to setup and what not however there's no NIC card on the printer so I figured I just share it using the machine. Sincerely, Michael

Hello Miguel, Thanks for your response. Even with that machine is on I still get that same error message: \\computername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect. I'm the domain admin as well as enterprise admin and I still get this error....I don't understand why. Network discovery is on and so is the print share...Any help is appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Michael

Mello MikeyBikes, Can you see if the Windows firewall on that machine is turned On and if so turn it off. Also check if there is any third part Firewall, for example one that me be a part of some A/V security system and then retry \\ipaddress and see if the shares show up. Yes the Windows Firewall is off because we're using Symantec Endpoint protection. I've completely shut down the AV software to test prior to this and it still didn't work. Michael

Hello, Try this from the command prompt: telnet thepcipaddress 445 also try for port 137,138,139 Those ports are needed for file sharing and netbios discovery. You should get a blank screen from the command after you git enter. If the connection is refused or blocked, then you have a firewall problem. Try disabling the Symantec firewall.Miguel Fra | Falcon IT Services, Miami, FL www.falconitservices.com | www.falconits.com | Blog
