Cannot see local network resources (by name) when vpn connected
When I connect a vpn, I cannot see locally shared resources on PCs other than the main server if I use the PC name (e.g. \\pcname\sharename). If I use the IP address then I can see the resources. When it doesn't work I get the error "an extended error has occurred" of it I just try to connect to \\pcname I get "\\pcname is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. The user name could not be found.". If I use the IP address it always works (i.e. \\192.168.168.1\sharename).If I connect 2 vpns to different sites and then disconnect one, I can now use the PC name to access resources. This works fine on XP and 2000 so I can't see why Vista would not allow it as well.Is this a bug or is there some way to make it work as it should?I have SP1 installed on Vista, but it did the same thing before I installed it.

Hi, To better understand the issue, please help to clarify the following points: 1. Are the share resources in LAN (local network) or the remote network (corporate network)? 2. Can you ping the PCs using the PC name when the issue occurs? Meanwhile, please check if the following KB can help: You cannot access SMB shares on a corporate network through a Remote Access Service (RAS) connection from a computer that is running Windows Vista http://support.microsoft.com/?id=933468
