Cannot see/mount/access/name D: drive
Hi, I've spent a week searching a solution but nothing helped, I've tried at least 10differentsoftwares like partition manager, disk/partition recovery, EasyBCD, NTFS data recovery, find and mount, ets... noone of them can't mount my D drive back and I cannot access my data, but I can see it from all recovery programs - it's there :) ... My Configuration is: Desktop, Windows 7, one SATA hard drive 500GB: 4 partitions (basic volumes) - System (C:) 50GB and Data (D:) 415GB for in Windows, one free 5GB and one 30GB completelydisappeared - becameinvisible after deleted Ubuntu :) So the point is that with Partition Magic I was trying to find the invisible 30GB part, so when I started the program it said there is mismatch in some sectors (all in (D:) drive) and if I want PM to fix them... I was so stupid to say Yes, and... from there on Windows do not recognize it... Actually in the Disk Management it is visible as volume, but has no letter and cannot assign a letter to it, gives me error: "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date, refresh the view, restart Disk Management or restart the computer and try again..."of coursethis doesn't help... I found an article how to use regedit in order toassign/changea letter to volume, but in the registry D is shown as mounted device (with all other A for flopy, C, E for DVD and F for USB, I mean all looks normal there), so I'm completely lost :) CHKDSK D: /f doesn't work, says "Cannot open volume for direct access" and if I try toschedulethis to be run after reboot with CHKNTFS /C D: it gives me error "Drive D does not exist" ha ha I also checked with this softwares for bad sectors - didn't find any, tried to rebuilt the partition table but got an error: "Some sectors wereallocatedto more than one partitions", when trying to add the drive letter (coz it hasn't any now) I get error "Mounting volume failed" Any ides how can I get back to Windows this (D:) drive and eventually how can I find this missing 30 GB - none of the softwares was able to find them as unallocated or something, but most of them show that the physical hard drive is 500GB, but all they work only with ~465? Thank you very much {}

First, the 30 Gig you are not finding is not really missing. The numbers you see, 500 Gb and 465 GB are due to the difference results when using binary vs base ten or decimal. Manufacturers like to use the big number when advertising their products but in reality, to most of us, the real usable number is smaller. Some may consider this misleading or false advertising, but those who have been around computers for a few years are aware of the difference and understand it. Also, some of the space on the drive is used for drive overhead and is not normally accessible to users. As far as your missing D: drive, I have no idea what the PM program tried to do. I'd suggest downloading 'Partition Wizard Home' (free) and see if it solves your problem for you. www.partitionwizard.com

Hi OldHobo, thanks 4 the reply, I tried some more research about mt issue, but finally FORMAT was the end...'Partition Wizard Home' is the first software fully compatible with Windows 7 andhas some nice features! it didn't help with mounting the old (D:) but helped me rearrange my whole hard drive, now it looks even better than before ;)... AND God bless the Data Recovery Tools :) And about the missing 30 GB... maybe u r right, but I'm sure they were here and I didn't add them to Windows after I deleted the Ubuntu.. so that's weird, but I'll keep on searching :o) Thanks a lot for the advises !
