Cannot print on Homegroup printer over Wi-Fi Windows 8.1 connection

Hello,

First of all a short summary of my network:

- Connected computers in total 6, two of them Windows 7 Enterprise x64 (one Ethernet, one Wi-Fi), two of them Windows 8 Enterprise x64 (both Ethernet), one Windows 8.1 x86 (Wi-Fi)

- One of the Win7 Enterprise systems is connected by Wi-Fi

- The Windows 8.1 system is connected by Wi-Fi

- All systems have fixed IP addresses within the same range

- All systems have the same HomeGroup, the same complete sharing definition

The problem:

- Only the Windows 8.1 system cannot add the main printer connected to a Windows 8 Enterprise x64 system

- The reason seems to be pretty clear, because the operating systems adds a "Microsoft WiFi Direct Virtual Adapter" to the available network definitions and assigns a "Undefined" and "Public Network" and shows "no network access"

- The Wi-Fi connection is fine and shows "Internet"

- I also can connect to the computer from all other systems just fine

Question:

- What can I do to "convince" this system to connect the WiFi Direct Virtual Adapter to the network? I'm sure that I will be able to add the printer then

Ideas?

Thanks in advance for your efforts

Hi,

Wi-Fi Direct is a new peer-to-peer device connectivity technology that enables high-bandwidth sharing of media and content between devices without requiring a separate Wi-Fi access point. It doesn't affect your printer connection.

Please let us know how did you connect? What error message or symptom appear when you attempt to connect the printer?

Try ping that Windows 8 computer which connect the printer to see what result.

Meanwhile, printers must use the correct driver for the type of computer they are connected to (x86-based or x64-based). please download the proper driver for your Windows 8.1.

Thanks for your response!

The printer is connected to a Win8 x64 system and the Win8.1 tablet from which I want to connect is a Win8.1 x86 O/S. So I assume that I have to install the x86 printer driver on the tablet and it will communicate with the printer connected on the x64 O/S ? Correct ?

I'll try it and report my results, thanks

Hi,

What's result of your test?

In short, if you want to add the printer to your computer, no matter it's USB or network printer, you must install the corresponding driver for your computer. The driver version depend on your current computer not the printer host computer.

Hi,

My test was unsuccessful. It tells me find the INF file for the printer, which I simply cannot find anywhere. Why is it possible that Windows 8 Enterprise x64 finds the proper driver file online, but Windows 8.1 x86 cannot find anything? The only thing I found on the HP website is an EXE file with the driver, installed it, but it doesn't connect to the network printer...

It's a HP Laserjet 1015 printer by the way

Merry Christmas! :)

Hi,

From your description, it should be the driver error. Let's do the following:

Your printer is shared via HomeGroup, right? Cnfirm it:

1.On the computer the printer is physically connected to, click the Start button, and then click Control Panel. In the search box, type homegroup, and then click HomeGroup.

2.Make sure the Printers check box is selected. (If not, select it, and then click Save changes.)

Make sure the share is OK, do the following:

1.Go to the computer you want to print from.

2.Open HomeGroup by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, typing homegroup in the search box, and then clicking HomeGroup.

3.Click Install printer.

4.If you don't already have a driver installed for the printer, click Install driver in the dialog box that appears.

To obtain the proper driver, refer to this guide:

Well, Karen, the printer is shared in the HomeGroup (otherwise it wouldn't be possible to print with all other network computers on it). Windows 8 Enterprise x64 and Windows 7 Enterprise x64 computers. The only computer unable to connect and print is the wireless Windows 8.1 x86 tablet...

Anyway, on the HomeGroup page within Control Panel there is no "Install printer", so I went to "Devices and Printers". There I say "Add Printer" and it shows me the printer in the selection as "HP LaserJet 1015". Ok so far. It tells me that there is no driver found and that I have to give the path for the proper INF file. I found 2 different INF files on the Internet: The Vista x64 INF file called "hpc1015w.inf" and an INF file Windows 8 x64 refers to on the computer where the printer is connected, called "prnhp001.inf". As soon as I give the path and hit <ENTER> the tablet responds with "Windows cannot connect to the printer... error code 0x00000124". All computers have the same name and password for the administrator user.

All Ethernet connected computers print just fine on the remotely connected printer, also a tablet with Windows 7 x64. It's just the Windows 8.1 x86 WiFi connected machine which gives this problem.

How to proceed?

Thanks for your efforts, appreciated!
