Part of removing a worm - AntiVirus 2008xp - I need to remove 2 dll's from the System32 Folder (shlapi.dll and wininet.dll). Even logging in as Administrator, Vista tells me I do not have permission to delete these files. First of all, why not? Administrator is ther highest User Group in the chain and should allow me to do anything (Or do I need to create a group called GOD?!). Secondly, I'm caught in a catch-22 where I cannot delete the entries from the registry nor can I delete them from the file. This worm has deleted all my registry entries for MS Office, Media Player, and who knows what all else.It also seems to have corrupted my restore points prior to getting the worm. I was hoping I could repair from the Ultimate Upgrade (w/SP1)DVD, but the repair option is greyed out. What to do?

Steve It's been my experience with removing many different virus and worms that trying to manually remove them is an exercise in frustration. You will never be able to have complete confidence that the virus is not still active on the system. Your best strategy is to backup all of your personal data to external media, using copy and paste, and then format the drive and clean install the OS. Then run a goodantivirus program on all of the backed up personal files, before moving them back to the new installation. The reason you are having problems deleting those files is because they are protected system files. Windows will not run without them. If these files have been replaced by infected files, you should replace them from the PE environment, using the Vista installation DVD and the command prompt.
