Hi, I'm having difficulty opening microsoft office files (Powerpoint, Word, or Excel) on a Sharepoint site when using IE. Here are the errors I get: Excel: Microsoft Office Excel cannot access the file 'https://<var>server_name</var> SPSsite/documents/<var>file_name</var> .xls'. There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist. The file being used by another program. The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a currently open workbook. Powerpoint: The path or file name for <var>'https://<var>server_name</var> SPSsite/documents/<var>file_name</var> .pot'.</var> is invalid. Please check that the path and file name are correct. Word: Word will not open any file Interestingly enough, using Firefox presents me with no issues. I tried to use this Hotfix since the issues it describes essentially mirror mine. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949405 However, the hotfix would not install. It said something about how "The Expected Version of the product was not found on the system". I'm sort of at a loss now on how to address this. Please help me if you can! I am having the same problem with Windows 7. I believe the problem lies with URLs or filenames that have spaces in them. The error message shows the URL with spaces instead of "%20". Firefox works for me retrieving these files since IE cannot access them with Sharepoint. Any ideas as to how to force IE to resolve the file names that have spaces in them?

You can try two things,1.- Creating a fake proxy with *.* on option of use proxy for local addresses.2.- Adding the sharepoint address to Intranet local sites and modifing the security on user authentication selecting "automatic loging using the loged user and password" (or something like that).I hope that it works for you.Regards,Gerard JuarezMCSE

Hi, I'm aware this is an old thread, but I came across this same issue and it turned out that the Office files couldn't open because the subfolder they were in had a special character in its name. After removing the special character from the folder's name, I was able to open the files. I hope this helps. Sonny
