Cannot open hyper-libks
I installed Windows 7 Professional yesterday (from Windows Vista Business), and I am runnning Internet Explorer 8. Now, however, whenever I click on a hyper-link in an email message (Outlook 2007), I get a message that "Windows cannot open this file." It happens when I try to open even the simplest of links: www.seafood.org.Why is this happening?Steve

Sounds like associations are messed up. I use Live Mail and it works fine for me.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)!

Open Control Panel\Default Programs\Set Associations . Scroll all the way to the bottom, See what HTTP and HTTPS are set to. For me they are set to SeaMonkey since that is my default browser. For you it should probably be Internet Explorer.

Hi Steve,
Based on my research, please try to set your browser as Default in “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs” and see how it works.
Change which programs Windows uses by default
Hope this helps. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thanks for the tip, but both HTTP and HTTPS are set to Internet Explorer. Any other suggestions?Steve

Thanks. When I go to "Set your default programs," Internet Explorer is not in the list of Programs. How do I add it?As I explained in response to the previous post, when I go to "Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program," both HTTP and HTTPS protocols are set to Internet Explorer.Steve

Hi Nicholas, Here's another piece of information. When I click on a hyperlink in an email message, I am told that "Windows can't open this file," and when I decide to "Select a program from a list of instaled programs," Internet Explorer is not on the list of program options. Google Chrome, for example, is on the list , and if I select it, the web page is displayed in Google Chrome. I then tried to add Internet Explorer to the list: I clicked Browse, found the iexplore.exe file, and clicked Open, but the program that was added to the list is Internet Explorer ImpExp FF exporter. I cannot seem to add Internet Explorer.Steve

Nicholas, Sorry for the numerous posts, but I keep finding new pieces of information. When I go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs, I am told that "Internet Explorer is not currently my default web browser," so I click the "Make Default" button and close the dialog box. But when I go back to Tools > Internet Options > Programs, I see that Internet Explorer is still not my default web browser.Steve

Nicholas, Last post: I fixed the problem. I went to Default Programs > Set program access and computer defaults, and then chose the Microsoft Windows configurations. I clicked OK, since Internet Explorer was the default web browser, and closed the dialog box. Now I can launched web pages from hyperlinks in email messages. Not sure what I did, but the problem appears to be solved. Sorry to have bothered you with so many posts. Steve
