Cannot open files from network share on a Windows 2003 domain
Hello,I have recently installed Windows 7 RC (7100) on my office computer. I have a Windows 2003 Sever Domain and I have set up network shares on my server that users use to share all the company documents. The rest worksations are Windows XP Professional. Every one can access any network share (e.g. \\server\common\documents\document.docx) and open it, edit it, whatever. I cannot!!!My account is the Domain administrator and the local computer administrator!!!So, when i try to open \\server\common\coduments\document.docx I get the error message " \\server\common\coduments\document.docxcannot be found. check your spelling, or try a different path."This error happens on any docx, xlsx filetype, but not on older doc or xls file types. It doesn't happen on any other filetype (jpg, png, pdf, whatever), only on docx and xlsx, pptx.I have tried disabling antivirus, no change.I have also tried to open the document through open menu inside word (or excel), but I get same error. The only way i found to somehow resolve this error is if i choose the whole network share to be available offline, BUT this is not what i want, because I simply don't want a whole of 40+ gb to be transfered every time i log on and log off, or every 15 minutes (my sync schedule). The other solution to convert all documents back to the older doc or xls format is also non accepted. It tooks us almost a wholeyear to convert all our documents to the new format.I think this might be a bug.Thank you very much

Hi, I have also checked this on my test machines, and this issue didnt occur. I suspect the issue may be related to security settings of the files. Please check the following: 1. Check the security settings of the files. 1) Right-click on the docx and xlsx files and select properties. 2) Ensure that you have assigned Full-Control permissions to Everyone on the Security tab of the properties. If not, please add the object Everyone and assign the Full control permission. 2. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit. Just for a test, if you go to the path \\server\common\documents\, please check if you can see the document.docx file and if you can open it. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi Nicholas,Thanks for your reply.I did everything you reccomend and here are the resultsOn "1. Check the security settings of the files." I have givven Everyone full control (although I don't want everyone to have full control on some files) but the same error occured. Nothing changed. I am reminding that the share is on a Domain Controller and my user account has full control on file and folder. On "2. Please perform a Clean Boot to check the issue." nothing changed either. I also was thinking that something had to do with the antivirus or firewall and I had disabled both of them, but the error kept appearing. With what you reccomend nothing changes. I still have same problem. On you reccomendation to visit the path and check if i can see the document, this is the main way i get acces to my documents. I visit the folder and i double click the file I see there! :-)I am reminding that my server runs on Windows 2003 (Not R2) and that I had not that kind of problem when I was running on Windows XP or from my Windows Vista Virtual PC.

Can you copy any of the docx file on your windows 7 machine and see if that works.. Also you can add the path \\server to the trusted site of Internet explorer To add the server location to trusted site 1. Open IE 2. Go to Tools > Internet Options . 3. Go to the Security Tab . 4. Click on Trusted Sites followed by Sites button. 5. Type in the \\server and remove the tick where it says "Requires Server Verification" 6 Press ADD > Close > OK Now try to open the docx file from the server. Hope that helps

Thanks Mukesh for your reply.I can coy file FROM \\server. I can copy file TO \\server. I can create folder ON \\server ... but I cannot create file on \\serverI have also tried what you reccomend, but no luck. When I logon from a Windows XP PC, everything works great. Only from my Windows 7 PC i have this issue!I am thinking that there is some kind of incompatibility between Windows 7 and Windows 2003 Server.

If you are not have write rights on the folder you might not able to open the docx file, as MS Word 2007 creates a temp file something like ~$filename mostly in the same folder where the original file exists. Refer the following article for more info http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211632 Would suggest you assign write rights to that specific folder and try to open the file again.

I do have write rights on folder. I have full rights on folder. Actually, my user belongs to the Domain Administrators group!!!The strange part is that when I logon from a Windows XP PC (with the same user account i logon from Windows 7 PC) I haven't that kind of problem.Actually when I logon from the Windows XP Virtual PC which is on the Windows 7 PC I haven't ANY problem!!!

I tried to open and create documents on another netwrok share on my network on a Windows 2000 Server (which is part of the domain) and everything is working great! The problem keeps showing only on the Windows 2003 Server share. I have also setup my user permissions to be full control, but no luck!

I have tried many things on that issue. Everyone reccomends that has something to do with the security settings (and I am pretty sure, that this is true), but everybody, thinks I should check network settings for a specific user and ON the share. But I am sure that the problem is on the Windows 7 side, since the user that has the problem is the Administrator!!!. Same user, has NO problem from ANY other pc, invluding the ones that run Vista. I have tried other users too, from the same PC and they too have problem. Is there any Microsoft Windows 7 guy that could help somehow on that?!Please! I am looking forward to upgrade all my company's PCs to Windows 7!

I have the same issue when trying to map to \\server\folder\program.exe or by using the IP of the server in explorer, i get the "\\server\folder\ cannot be found. check your spelling, or try a different path." or "There is no network path". The workstation is running Windows 7 Professional and the share is on a file server running Server 2003 with the file server role installed. The XP machines have no issue connecting to the folders. There is a specific program that is stored in the file they need to access. I've verified permissions on the file server share, folder, and program. It pings OK, tracert's ok, etc. Any ideas or thoughts would be a huge help! Thanks!

Have a look into differences between Windows XP and Windows 7. My first thought, is to do with the Network Location setting, where the network is detected as Public or Unknown network. My second thought, is that the file associations for these files is corrupted or associated to the wrong program type. Otherwise, check that you have the Office Compatibility Pack, with latest service packs for this program installed.Ian
