Cannot modify user accounts.
I have a customer pc that was infected with a couple viruses. When she brought it in. It would boot to the welcome screen but there was no user accounts to click on. Safemode would not boot at all. I connected the hard drive to another pc and removed several viruses. I can now boot into safemode as administrator. Her personal account seems to be missing. I cannot access the user accounts under control panel. I get an error "cannot find the file specified." I have been searching for 2 days on this error. I have tried re registering DLL's and checking the registry for HTA settings. All looks good. Here is a couple other wierd things I found. If I add a user using net user I can see the user at the welcome screen and log in. If I try to make the user an admin with net localgroup I get error "cannot find the file specified" If I click on c: and look at the security. I have 2 users that do not show names on SIDS. I am guessing this would be administrator and her account. Can anyone think of anything else to try? I don't want to reload windows just for this problem. I have tried doing a windows repair and then install SP3. Still exact same problem. XP home service pack 3 Thanks Bill 1 person needs an answerI do too

1. Boot with a Linux Live CD/USB key using a distro like Knoppix or Ubuntu. If Linux can see the data, copy it to an external hard drive. Then do a clean install of Windows. http://www.knoppix.net 2. If Linux can't see the data, use data recovery software to get it. Then do a clean install of Windows. R-Studio - http://www.r-tt.com/MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I can get the data off with my USB adapter. There is no one out there with any ideas on how to actually fix this without a reload?
