If you have MS Word installed on the system you can use the 'Insert Symbols' (Alt+I, S) to generate the characters you need.

limbokiller,Have you tried Alt and the code number? is holding alt and pressing 0233. is Alt + 0234.If you open the character map in Start, Accessories, system, character map and find what you want to use, click once on it and in the lower right corner it shows you the key combination to use.

limbokiller - Are you absolultely sure you didn't have some sort of keyboard utility in use on XP? Because I just tried it both on my XP box and Windows 7 box - and neither one of them allowed me to use Shift + <char> to create accented characters.

limbokiller - Ok... I just tried what you suggested and could not duplicate it. Though, I did come across something that might explainwhy. What keyboard layout do you have installed? Better yet, what keyboard layout did you have installed under XP? I was checking out the help file from Office XP on my XP box and it has an entry about Alt-GR keys. It said something to the effect that on some keyboards, there's a special key (Alt-GR) that allows special characters to be inserted - and that the Alt-GR key is equal to the Ctrl+Alt key combination. And that if you pressed the Alt-GR (or Ctrl-Alt) key plus any of the supported keys, you'd get a special character. It didn't work on my system. Likely because I didn't have the language support for the languages I tried installed on the XP box. So hitting Ctrl+Alt+4 (which yields the euro symbol on a Brit keyboard) Nor did the Ctrl+Alt+e thing yield the character for Hungarian or other languages that have that character. So I'm thinking you may be missing a language pack or support for a keyboard... And if you do have said language pack or keyboard layout loaded, then there may be an issue with it.
