Cannot make Remote Desktop connection from Windows 7 to XP Pro SP3 when XP host is in screensaver mode
I have RD host set up on my desktop running XP Pro SP3 with two monitors (dual display is managed by Ultramon). I can connect to it using the RD client on my Windows 7 64 bit laptop without any problems if my desktop is "awake". (Though RD forces all open windows on the host onto a single screen on the main monitor, which is annoying when I return to my desktop.) I have a significant problem, however, if my desktop is in screensaver mode (and/or the monitors go to sleep - not sure which condition causes the problem.) If the desktop is in this state when I try to connect with the RD client, I get a connection but the screen on the laptop (client) is just blank -- nothing at all but a blue background. I exit the RD client normally and then check my desktop, after logging back in I find that the desktop is completely empty: no icons, no task bars - nothing -- just my wallpaper across the two screens. I try everything from ctrl-alt-del to shift-tab -- nothing happens. When I finally shut my desktop down with the power button (because it's effectively unusable), all the program windows suddenly re-appear and then shut down one by one as windows shuts down. It is really really annoying to have RD affect my desktop like this so that I have to power down every time I make the mistake of trying to RD into it when the screensaver is on. Does anyone have any idea what is going on here????

Hi Billmeister, Thanks for the post! You cannot connect to a computer that is sleeping or hibernating. Make a power plan to never go to sleep or hibernate. In addition, Remote Desktop client version 6.0 starts to support multiple monitors, refer to this: Using Multiple Monitors in Remote Desktop Session Regards, MiyaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | Please remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks, Miya -- thanks for the reference to the multimonitor support - I'll check it out. wrt sleeping/hibernation, you've misunderstood the situation. I did not say that the computer went to sleep or into hibernation. I said that the screen-saver was on and/or the monitors went to sleep (ie computer stopped sending the signal to the monitor.) The computer itself is always on. Bill
