Cannot install Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant.
Well, I am having some issues installing "Windows Live Essentials" update and "Games for Windows Marketplace". I have found that the cause of this is from "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant", (wllogin_64.msi) which I am unable to install. Things I have tried: Removed every live related application with the windows cleanup tool. Tried to install wllogin_64.msi as administrator. Tried to install wllogin_64.msi in safe mode. Restored from an earlier system point. Ran chkdsk. Ran a virus and spyware scan. Hmmm...Windows Live ID Sign-In is an add-on to IE8. Therefore, you would need both versions x86 and x64, one for each browser in a 64-bit system. Since you have the 64-bit version already downloaded, launch the 64-bit browser from the start menu and attempt the install. If that works, get the 32-bit version for the 32-bit browser (main IE link and taskbar shortcut) and install that also. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=5E193CFE-F45A-4E29-B6B7-984E7802C639&displaylang=en Any success?

If it's an add-on for IE8, what about those who have the "N" addition of Windows 7? Are we just not allowed to utilize GFWL? I have tried both installers, the x86 version tells me that I can't install it on a 64-bit OS, and the error that I get from attempting to install the x64 version is as follows: "Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run Setup Wizard again." Is it possible to run GFWL without the use of the Sign-In Assistant? I'd like to know because I'd rather not have multiple internet browsers on my computer at one time. Thank you for your time.

Hi, Is it Live Essentials 2011? Please refer to the similar situation here: http://www.ms-windows.info/Help/unable-install-windows-live-essentials-16533.aspx , try the solutions there. If the issue persists, since this is the Windows Live issue, I recommend you ask question in Windows Live Solution Center. Hi, I am having the same problem with Sign-In assisstant refusing to install. I've tried everything listed above and nothing seems to work. I've been able to use Games for Windows Live successfuly before with previous games the most recent of which was Batman Arkham Asylum. I recently purchased and installed Dawn fo War 2 and now everytime I try to sign in to my live account it says I require an update. It then closes the game, drops back to desktop where it tries to install Sign In Assisstant and then just stops doing anything. The only reason I got this game was to play it multiplayer with my friends overseas but apparently I can't do that without this assisstant program.

Hi, I'm having the same issue as the OP. I just recently got Resident Evil 5 for PC. I've had it like a month and I can't get it to work. At first I tried it on my desktop, which runs on XP, and I found out part of my issue was the fact that some of my parts are out of date. However, I could never get Games For Windows Live to work because it would never connect to download my profile because of a "network error". I later found out that there's something called hotfix.exe that you need to have to get it to work. I looked THIS up and found it on the Microsoft website and then found out, thankfully, before I ran it that someone else had been having the same issue as me with Left 4 Dead, and when they installed hot fix it crashed their computer, and they no longer have an operating system. So I did NOT run hotfix.exe on my desktop. I have been since waiting to get my laptop back to install it. It runs on Windows 7, and is considerably newer. Now, I have sat here for 7 hours waiting for RE5 to install. It installed, finally and brought up the game screen. I went to sign into GFWL, and it worked! However, it also said that there an "update" that needed to be completed and gave me bullshit saying that if I didn't do it, it would sign me out. (This is also the same message it has been giving me whenever I try to sign into Messenger. It should also be noted that as well as with messenger, it won't fucking install.) So, anyway, I downloaded and installed the update. It closed out the game, started it back up and I went through the same process again. I downloaded this mysterious update THREE times. Finally, I restarted my computer. I went back into the game and was met with the same message again. This time I closed it out and went to run Games For Windows Live to see if maybe I could find a list of needed updates and do them all at once. It told me I needed the sign-in assistant to run it so I went to download that. Like OP, I'm being met with the same issue. It just goes through the process every time and always closes out because of some "error". On top of this, now I can't even get Resident Evil 5 to start. It keeps giving me yet ANOTHER "error" message. I don't know what to do next aside from un-install it and try again, but I sat here for six fucking hours waiting on it to install the FIRST time. This is also the third computer I have sat and waited to try and install this game on. I am at a total loss, and I'm very, very angry. If I may rant for a second: What the fuck are all these mysterious "errors" I keep having on a new computer that's running perfectly, and why the fuck don't they explain what the goddamn error is so I can fix it? (In hindsight, that might be in the logs but I've been to angry to look into them.) And also, in my searching for fixes for this problem, I've come across posts from 2008 and 2009 of people having the same issues. Explain to me why the it's 2011 and it's STILL not fixed? I am not happy with Microsoft right now, at all. I think it's bullshit you have to even sign up for an account to even save the info. None of the many other games I play do that. And how are we supposed to be able to play the goddamn games if Games For Windows Live is glitched? I've never done anything with GFWL before this so I didn't know it was having these issues. Do I need to search EVERY aspect of a game AND it's software AND the people that made it available to make sure I can play it now? Is spending 2 thousand dollars on computers from Microsoft and another 30 on a game not enough of a payment to be able to play the fucking game?

Yeah, this rubbish is ticking me off. Nothing works and there's no reason why any of it shouldn't. "Errors" with no explanations, GFLW was working perfectly well BEFORE I installed Section 8: Prejudice (even if I thought it was a useless annoyance) and there's no way to fix it- and just to put the icing on the cake, my bloody automatic updates doesn't seem to want to turn on any more!

I'm experiencing the same frustration as most of you with this Sign-in Assistant ending prematurely "...because of an error". I can't play Arkham City. I've tried every single "solution" I found online. I've reinstalled Windows Live, I've reinstall the game itself, I've deleted cookies, I've enabled cookies, I've defragged my computer, I've deleted browser history, I've sacrificed a small animal (OK, not really) and I am over it. I don't know what more I can possibly do to get this *expletive* thing to work. Get it together, Microsoft. This is absolutely unacceptable.

I had the same problem as you with Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5 that comes with Games for Windows Live. However, I found the solution. The Microsoft technical support article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2549386 works for me. Basically you just run the wllogin_32.msi installer package manually using the following command: Msiexec /i wllogin_32.msi /l*v C:\setupLogs.log NOMU=1 It creates a log file in the root of C:\ so you can see what happened if the installation failed.

I'm having this issue. I know it's a pretty old issue but it's still affecting me. I get Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and it tells me I need to instal Games for Windows LIVE, don't know why I need this in the first place, and when I try and instal it I get to Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant and the following happens: "It looks like another program is preventing the installer from working. Error: 0x80070643 Source: wllogin-amd64" I've tried everything above, I even tried to manually find "wllogin-amd64" on my computer and couldn't, nothing is working. I am seriously getting pissed at this, no idea why a program I don't want or need is stopping me from playing a game that I PAID FOR and worst of all, it's a program not related to the game? Come on seriously? That is just bull.
