Cannot install KB2737155 (64-bit)

Hi all,

A little background....  A few of us running Win7 x64 carried out manual installs of Lync 2010 client.  Later, a few weeks down the line we deployed Lync to the rest of the organisation (all Win7 x86) using a GPO that pushed out the Lync MSI.  This worked fine and all the machines received it ok.

I am wondering if this GPO might have applied to our x64 machines and screwed something up?  Lync works fine, it's just that we can't install this update.

Running Windows 7 x64.  When I try to install I get:

The Installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package.  This may indicate a problem with this package.  The error code is 2727.

In eventvwr I get:

Windows Installer reconfigured the product. Product Name: Microsoft Lync 2010. Product Version: 4.0.7577.4356. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. Reconfiguration success or error status: 1603.

Log file show:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2727. The arguments are: INSTALLDIRECTORY64, ,

I used msiexec to create a verbose log file and the bold part stands out:

I am now also unable to reinstall or uninstall Lync 2010. :(  Any ideas?

Try to install the package on Win 7 computer as a administrator manually other than the GPO.

Download another package to try again.

I have done a little more digging and it would appear that this issue is not isolated to this KB.

It seems that the combination of a manual install of the x64 client coupled with the later GPO msi install have screwed it up.  I cannot understand why this is considering that the msi file that we used in the GPO should be the same as the one included in the Lync x64 setup file.

So what was the fix?
