Cannot install Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server

Hello,

I am attempting to install Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server on my two node DAG.  It gets part way through the installation and fails with the following error: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.  A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support  personnel or package vendor."

This package installed perfectly fine on the first of the two servers, so

  • I tried downloading the software again to make sure there wasn't corruption issues.
  • I uninstalled and re installed the software on my first node with the new package, it worked just fine.
  • I tried shutting down all Exchange and Forefront services before installing the software.

Same results no matter what I do.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,

Thank you for the post.

Please verify the system requirement on the second node: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc482970.aspx

My server exceeds the minimum requirements, I suppose I shouild have included that information.

I found this currious entry in the setup log.

MSI (c) (E4:FC) [12:04:17:800]: Connected to service for CA interface.
CustomAction checkServiceList returned actual error code 1157 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)

It seems if I could determine what "checkServiceList" did, perhaps that would give me a clue where to look

The problem turned out to be an OS issue. Somehow the "Dbghelp.dll" was missing , which is normally located  in C:\windows\syswow64\dbghelp.dll.

The solution was a simple one:  I ran sfc /scannow from a command prompt and it repaired the missing file.  I was then able to install FPE.

So, I guess unless someone has the same situation and happen to be installing Forefront Protection for Exchange, they will probably never stumble on this and find it helpful.  I guess well have to wait and see.  :-)
