Cannot initiate Windows Sidebar with my standard account
When I logon with the build-in administrator account, I can start and use Windows Sidebar. But when I logonwith my standard account, thoughmy standardaccount belongs to the group of administrators, I get the error that only the system-owner has access to Windows Sidebar. There is also another program Ihave only full-controlof, using the build-in adm., with my standardaccount I have less functionallity.Whether I en- or disable the build-in Administrator account makes no difference to the behavior of my standardaccount.Tried also the procedure as described in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313222/en-usbut thid didn't change the behavior too.My O/S is Vista Ultimate. Is there anyone known with this issue?

Ok..try this... open "run" prompt and then type in "gpedit.msc" from your currently logged in account where you have problem in getting a sidebar. probably you would be asked by the UAC to continue . Click on continue and you will see the "local group policy editor" window open and in the right hand pane look for "user configuration" and below that look for "administrative templates" and then expand the tree and then look for "windows components" ,expand the tree and then look for "windows sidebar".Click on the "windows sidebar" and now on the right hand pane you should see a couple of options relating to the sidebar. now look for "turn off windows sidebar" option and double click on it. See if the setting is highlighted on the "Not configured" radio button. If yes select it on to the "Enabled" radio button and then "Apply" and "OK" .Now go to the control panel and switch to classic view and then look for "windows sidebar properties" and check the mark which says"start sidebar when windows starts" and then select whichever orientation you wish to and that should be it.. if you still have problems please post it here you have still more steps to fix it.....:)Regards, KOWSHAL H.M. a.k.a W@R10CK

Hi, Thank you for posting in Microsoft TechNet Forum. Regarding this issue, may I ask some more questions: 1. How do you perform adding a standard user account to the group of administrators? I suspect that this standard user account doesnt belong to the group of administrators, I would like to suggest that you confirm this by using whoami.exe tool. Download Whoami.exe http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=723f64ea-34f0-4e6d-9a72-004d35de4e64&DisplayLang=en Please start a command prompt to run whoami.exe /all >c:whoami1.txt then post the information to this thread. 2. What is the exact error you received? Please give us a screenshot. Screenshot ======= 1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2) Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3) In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4) The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5) Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click Desktop on the left pane and then click "Save". Please post the picture in this thread. Meanwhile, I would like to share some common troubleshooting here. 1. Turn off User Account Control (UAC) and Windows Security software such Windows Firewall. 2. Manually initiate Windows Sidebar from the source folder and see if it can be started. a) Open the folder: C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar b) Right click on the icon of sidebar.exe, and click Run as administrator If you can't start Windows Sidebar, continue the step. 3. Take ownership of sidebar.exe and click to start it again. Please visit the following website which is for Windows XP but also applies to Windows Vista. How to take ownership of a file or a folder http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421/en-us 4. Log on with administrator account and reinstall Windows Sidebar. How to reinstall Windows Sidebar Please respond back with details to above questions, I will perform a further troubleshooting. Hope this helps. Thanks.

This problem is solved Kowshal. Your postingbrought me quite near the solution. So, I thank you for your investment.I followed your path. The "Not configured" radiobutton highlighted and I selected "Enable" as you did advise. Also took a look at the control panel " windows sidebar properties". Everything seemed oke..... In spite of a restart the sidebar didn't appear. Then I selected again the "Not configured" radiobutton, and I can say, I have it still selected. After a restart of the system the sidebar appeared again andstill works normally.Don't know what caused the problem. Just had to change the setting in the windows components from "Not configured" to "Enabled" and to put the setting back to "Not configured" and of course to restart the system.

Once more thanks for your repley.I don't quite understand why I had to download the whoami.exe .By the way, I use a not-english version ofVista andas a PC dummyI don't know how to copy the results of the whoami.exe in this thread. But I'm also running the Win7 RC1, which one is in English, and made a comparaison between Vista and W7.Fact is that in the list that appears afterrunning whoami.exe I'm missing in Vista two Groupnames which are mentioned in W7:1) underneath Everyone, I miss completely, 'myname'\HomeUsers Alias (etc, etc)2) Also is missingConsole LogonFor the rest, the results of whoami.exe in W7 en my Vista look exact the same.Oke the Sidebar problem isalready solved, but may me the whoami.exe results make sens, because I still don't have full control overone of my applications using my standard account. On the take ownership of a file or folder suggestion I may come back later. Thanks
