Cannot get Windows 7 laptop to connect to non-broadcasted wireless network
At work We are running a RADIUS server on a windows 2003 current service release and patches. I am trying to use a laptop running windows 7 to connect to a nonbroadcasted wireless network that we have running for our internal users. I can take the laptop downgrade it to vista or XP and the wireless works. As soon as I install windows prof 7 and join the computer to our AD domain ... I am unable to connect to the nonbroadcasted network. I have the most up to date network cars drivers installed on the HP laptop. All the settings are greyed out under the wireless properties section. Any suggestions?

Does your non-broadcasting wireless network have an SSID? If so, you will need to enter the SSID manually. I have my home wireless setup with a non-broadcasting SSID and I have to enter the SSID manually the first time I setup Win 7 to connect to it. Do you have Windows WLAN AutoConfig service running on the Win 7 system?

Yes our Non-broadcasting wireless does have an SSID. When I check on the properties of the non-broadcasted network the SSID appears in all the correct places. I also checked and WLAN AutoConfig service is running set at automatic and the service is started.

Hi RMALLORI,Temporarily disable the firewall on the client and attempt a connection? If you are using the Win 7, perhaps a service is being blocked.

Already disabled the firewall... what services may be being blocked? It does not appear to be the case. Any other suggestions?

Ok. Are you copying the user profile to the Win 7 computer? I recall from the beta and RC testing that creating a new profile in the Win 7 client resolved some issues with domain logons, file access, etc.Yes, it's a pain. Before I forget, in Control Panel, System and Security, Windows Firewall, allow a program through Windows Firewall, a list appears of existing services and the ability to add. Is Netlogon service ticked (allowed through the firewall)?

I created a brand new profile on the windows 7 computer and yes we also had issues when we copied a user profile when we were RC testing as well. The netlogon service was not being allowed through the firewall. I have set it to allow. Restarted the laptop, our non broadcasted network is showing up undercontrol panel, network and internet, manage wireless networks and its set to automatically login. I do see two wireless networks labeled "other network" in the wireless network connection but if I try to connect to either of those using our nonbroadcasted SSID I get the error that the SSID is wrong for this connection.

Are the Routing and Remote Access and Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol being allowed through the firewall?Other than that, perhaps Event Viewer can tell you if a connection is attempting and failing or being denied for some reason.

Hi, Please try to remove and re-create the wireless profile of your network: 1) Disconnect your wireless network. 2) Go to Network and Sharing Center. 3) Click “Manage wireless networks”. 4) In Manage Wireless Networks window, remove all the wireless profile of your network. 5) Then reconnect to the wireless network with inputting the SSID and your credential. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
