Cannot find other computers in the workgroup when using wireless
I finally got my wireless connection to work with a firmware upgrade on the wireless modem. The connection to the internet works fine. When I tried to join the workgroup of my home network with Windows XP and Window 95 computers, it cannot find any other computers. After a great deal of various tries I found that if I connect with the ethernet wired connection, the workgroup and all the computers are available. Sharing of files and printers is working fine. If I go back to the wireless connection, there is nothing recognized on the network. I've looked through all the NORTON firewall settings and cannot find any hint of any difference between the wired and wireless connection. Does anybody know the solution to this problem. I am using a Broadcom wireless on my Windows Vista laptop and a Westell wireless router.

Are all of your PCs wireless? If so its possible the wireless router is configured so wireless clients can not see each other. I can configure my old Buffalo WBR-G54 like that. I would check the router config settings for security settings like that or similar.

Only the laptop is wireless. All other computers are wired via ethernet cable. I have been successful at locating computers with another wireless laptop running Windows XP on this network, but it is not connected now. I don't find any configuration settings to address this issue.

You may want to look and see if you are sending the necessary Netbios ports 139 that tell the rest of the network the necessary microsoft names of shares etc and therefore sees the same from the other workstations server etc. It is working when you plug in the hardwire right? IF SO then the issue is in maybe the firewall on the workstation with the wireless connection it maybe in the wireless connection itself. Be sure you are sharing a drive this seems to help, but most importantly make sure you have the microsoft client installed in the properties of that connection. Good luck if you need be my cell is 224-265-3017. Good luck Jerry

Great, you gave me the clue I needed. Looking up the NetBIOS on the help menu led me to the right process. Open network connections Review the properties of the wireless network Review the properties of the TCP/IP V4 network protocol Look at the advanced settings See the "WINS" tab At the bottom, set the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" option Opening up networks now finds the other computers on the network and file and print sharing is working fine.
