Cannot enable Media Sharing
I'm relatively confident this issue belongs in the networking forums, but it may be application related.I'm trying to enable Media Sharing on a Vista Home Premium SP1 workstation with zero success. I've gone about it two ways. First by opening Windows Media Player, dropping down the Library menu and choosing Media Sharing. The second, by opening the Network and Sharing Center, expanding the Media Sharing item and clicking the Change button. In both instances, I can place a check mark in the box labeled "Share My Media" (and additionally in "Find Media that others are sharing" for the network dialogue box) but when I click the OK button, nothing happens. The button changes to the blue highlight color indicating I've clicked and it displays the shield icon inside the button indicating administrator permission is required, but nothing else occurs. No prompt (it doesn't appear 'behind' the window or in the task bar) for verification and the dialogue box stays as if nothing was clicked. My only option is to click Cancel, which cancels as expected.I've read solutions elsewhere around the web, including to start the service manually, but when I choose to start the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, I receive an error explaining that the service started then stopped. It's dependencies, UPnP and SSDP Discovery are active and functioning (I've also tried restarting each of these services).I have tried enabling and disabling the firewall settings in addition to the UAC options resulting in more of the same. Other workstations (most running Vista Home Basic) respond and share files as I would expect. Please help!

Hi, It seems that the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service does not work properly. I suggest that you disable the anti-virus and firewall, then try to enable again. If the issue is not resolved, let's try to repair the service from Registry. However, if some of the system components related this service are corrupt or lost, repair the Registry would not work. Repair the system from Registry. 1. Open Register editor: click Start, in the Start Search box type "regedit" and press Enter. 2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WMPNetworkSvc 3. Right-click on WMPNetworkSvc, choose Export. Save it to Desktop with the name WMPNetworkSvcold.reg as a backup. 4. Click Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad. 5. Paste the following contents into Notepad. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WMPNetworkSvc] "DisplayName"="@%ProgramFiles%\\Windows Media Player\\wmpnetwk.exe,-101" "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 "ImagePath"=hex(2):22,00,25,00,50,00,72,00,6f,00,67,00,72,00,61,00,6d,00,46,00,\ 69,00,6c,00,65,00,73,00,25,00,5c,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,\ 00,20,00,4d,00,65,00,64,00,69,00,61,00,20,00,50,00,6c,00,61,00,79,00,65,00,\ 72,00,5c,00,77,00,6d,00,70,00,6e,00,65,00,74,00,77,00,6b,00,2e,00,65,00,78,\ 00,65,00,22,00,00,00 "Start"=dword:00000002 "Type"=dword:00000010 "Description"="@%ProgramFiles%\\Windows Media Player\\wmpnetwk.exe,-102" "DependOnService"=hex(7):55,00,50,00,6e,00,50,00,48,00,6f,00,73,00,74,00,00,00,\ 68,00,74,00,74,00,70,00,00,00,00,00 "ObjectName"="NT AUTHORITY\\NetworkService" "ServiceSidType"=dword:00000001 "RequiredPrivileges"=hex(7):53,00,65,00,43,00,68,00,61,00,6e,00,67,00,65,00,4e,\ 00,6f,00,74,00,69,00,66,00,79,00,50,00,72,00,69,00,76,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,\ 67,00,65,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,43,00,72,00,65,00,61,00,74,00,65,00,47,00,6c,\ 00,6f,00,62,00,61,00,6c,00,50,00,72,00,69,00,76,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,67,00,\ 65,00,00,00,00,00 "FailureActions"=hex:80,51,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,14,00,00,\ 00,01,00,00,00,30,75,00,00,01,00,00,00,30,75,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 "DelayedAutostart"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WMPNetworkSvc\Security] "Security"=hex:01,00,14,80,8c,00,00,00,98,00,00,00,14,00,00,00,30,00,00,00,02,\ 00,1c,00,01,00,00,00,02,80,14,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\ 00,00,02,00,5c,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,fd,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,\ 05,12,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,\ 20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,9d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,04,00,00,00,00,\ 00,14,00,8d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,06,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,\ 00,05,12,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WMPNetworkSvc\Enum] "0"="Root\\LEGACY_WMPNETWORKSVC\\0000" "Count"=dword:00000001 "NextInstance"=dword:00000001 6. Hi, I have exactly the same issue... cannot enable Media Sharing on Vista Ultimate SP1. I am trying to connect PS3 to read my media files. This is what happens: I open Windows Media Player, dropping down the Library menu and choosing Media Sharing... I check the box labeled "Share My Media" but when I click the OK button, nothing happens. The button changes to grayed out, indicating I've clicked it. No prompt for verification and the dialogue box stays as if nothing was clicked. My only option is to click Cancel, which cancels as expected. No errors in the Error Log. All services running as default settings. Please help

Hi, Launch dervices.msc, find the service "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service", double-click it, try to disable and enable it. Let us know if it works properly. If the service is fine, I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall, and then try to share media library again. Please let us know the result.

I'm having the same result as ZeeZee. I have tried the exporting the registry and doing the above and that did not work. Where can I find "dervices.msc"? You mean services.msc, and I cannot start this service, I have tried per above and failed. SSPD and UPNP start with out a hitch, however I get the error from event log with windows media sharing service: Service 'WMPNetworkSvc' did not start correctly because QueryService encountered error '0x80070002'. In Windows Media Player, turn off media sharing, and then turn it back on.Scouring the internet did not find much nor Technet... I used to be able to see network devices for sharing at one time... this has disappeared during one of the windows updates... I dont know when as I just hooked back up the 360. Any help on this would be appreciated.
