Cannot delete unknown folder - I think I have all permissions
A folder showed up on my seagate backup drive - I don't know how it got there, certainly not directly by me. No one else uses the drive - it's in my home, not a workplace. I regularly backup my system to this drive using SynchBackSE. The folder has a name which is just a long string of characters, numbers and lower case letters. It's about 31 MB, and contains 71 objects: mostly .xml, .png, .jpg, .bmp, .dll, .exe, and a few single files of other types. This is not a hidden or system folder. I can open the folder, and view the file listing, but none of them can be opened or their contents viewed. Many of the files have "wmp" in the name, and there is even a "wmplayer.exe" in there. Something appears to be accessing and modifying these files, because the date modified varies, from 4/25/06 to as recent as 10/14/09. I have tried to delete it, but this fails based on permissions. I have tried as top level administrator, with full permissions. I have tried in safe mode. The folders owner was originally set to a similar or possibly identical string of characters, like the folder name - I am not certain as I did not record it. I successfully took ownership of the folder into the Admin group, and I still cannot delete it. Seagate says it is definitey not anything they installed on the drive. I am not certain exactly how long it has been there, but it seems very unlikely that the folder was on this drive unnoticed since 2006. I noticed it some months ago. Could this concievably be something legitimate, or is it definitely virus related? How could I tell? How can I delete it? It does not seem like it could be anything I would need on my backup drive. Thanks for any suggestions.

Please someone respond to this. How about using command prompt to delete folder from backup drive? I keep trying cd "S:\" where S: is the drive letter. This does not work. Is there any way to access & administer the USB hard drive from command prompt? Any other suggestions to delete the folder? Vista is still locking me out of my own house... Thanks

Very disappointing that this question was completely ignored. I finally was able to delete it using the file shredder that is part of the TuneUp Utilities package.
