Cannot delete html file on desktop because of incorrent syntax, or name is too long?
Hi, I am running Windows 7 Professional. There is a file I saved on my desktop that I cannot delete either because of incorrect syntax or because the length of the file is too long (maybe both are the problem). I have tried tons of things to get rid of it: I tried deleting it from the command prompt, I've tried renaming it, relocating it to a new folder so I could delete it with the folder, etc. but nothing seems to work. I was wondering if anybody has had success with this or knows a way that could help; that would be great. Thanks! By the way, the path/name of the file is: C:\Users\Username\Desktop\Fancast | Watch Full TV Shows and Movies | Free Online Streaming | Xfinity TV Once again, if anybody could help with this I would be so grateful, it's been bothering me for a long time, thanks!

Hello! Did you try rename it in windows explorer with F2? This should work fine. Although it should not be possible to save file with '|' characters using standard API, but some browsers could do that :) As last thing you can use Eraser, for example.

Hey Ase777, thanks for the super quick response! I haven't tried that yet, but I will right now, I'll get back to you. Thanks.

I tried using the F2 function in explorer, but when I hit enter to save the new file name it just reverts back to the original file name. I'll download Eraser and try that out though.

Okay, so I've downloaded Eraser and I went to create a new task and selected the file for deletion but when I selected to open the file a message pops up saying "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

OK seems like things are not so good :-) try all that described in this topic http://winhlp.com/node/39 - There is no way to fail deletion after all that is described there ;-)

I've actually already tried everything on that site, and still no luck, haha. But thanks, it's a very stubborn file.

oh well... lets go step by step then :-) did you try safe mode? and try to rename it in md with "ren" using '?' instead of '|' ?

I've actually already tried everything on that site, and still no luck, haha. But thanks, it's a very stubborn file. My fast way is to boot with Lunix live cd and try delete the file.ITBM

I might try that, I have a Ubuntu 10.04 Live CD I made before, if the safe mode doesn't work as Ase777 suggested I'll give that a try.

Ubuntu LiveCD can help as well

Yeah, the safe mode didn't work, I can't understand this file! I'm going to try the Ubuntu Live CD, hopefully that's the solution.

The 'thing' with this file is only in that it has reserved (by Windows) characters in it's name ;-) Ubuntu has no 'fetish' about that and you might be successful with it. Hopefully.

Ah, what a relief! The Ubuntu Live CD worked! Thank you both for helping me out, I'm so glad that's done with. I know what to do now if I have a problem with Windows; switch over to Ubuntu, haha.

actually windows 'things' can work this out but Ubuntu is easiest way ;)
