I have a laptop and desktop with Win 7 HP on both. I am trying to create hompegroups, but I keep getting the error "Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer". Both the computers are wirelessly connected to the router. Any help is appreciated.ThanksPrabhu

Hi,Check your adapter setting for IPv6. Your network connection must have IPv6 enabled to create or join a homegroup. If it is disabled, follow the steps below to enable it.1) Right click on the network icon and select Open the Network and Sharing Center.2)In the resulting window, select Change adapter settings.3)In the Network Connections window, select the Wireless Connection , then Change settings of this connection or file>properties.4)In the connection property page, check the box for Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).Close all the windows and reboot your system. Try creating a HomeGroup againCheck this also http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-cannot-connect-to-homegroup/ Hope you find the info useful

Setting up a HomeGroup Click the Start button or press the Windows key. When the Start Menu opens, select Control Panel . When the Control Panel window opens, in the section labelled Network and Internet , Choose “Homegroup and Sharing Options.” The Homegroup window opens, click the button labelled, Create a Homegroup . The “Create a Homegroup” window opens, displaying the features you can share – Pictures , Documents , Music , Printers and Videos . Check the boxes for those items you wish to share. Click the Next button. Next, Windows 7 generates a password to allow other computer user(s) to join the Homegroup. Click Print password and instructions . Give the Password information sheet to the other computer user(s). Click the Finish button . I cannot get past Step 7. It just gives me an error.

I got the same error. I gave up. I'm not sure why Microsoft didn't include IPv6? Perhaps we all need an update? The problem might be that some machines and routers are still not IPv6 enabled yet.

I was having the same trouble. I have been desperately searching the internet for an answer to this issue. I was previously having some issues with my wireless and totally forgot I had disabled a couple services. Details to follow: Errors: HomeGroup trouble shooter results: "The HomeGroup permissions are incorrect" Creating HomeGroup initial error - "Windows cannot set up a HomeGroup on this computer" Solution: Try turning off your firewall. If that doesn't work, move on to step 2 Make sure that IPv6 is enabled (wireless and/or wired depending on how you connect to your network). Still no good? Try door #3! Go to your Services list... Start->Control Panel-> System and Security->Administrative Tools->Services -OR- Click Start and then type "Services" (no quotes). Make sure that these are set to "Automatic" and are started: HomeGroup Listener (if you are trying to CONNECT to a HomeGroup) HomeGroup Provider (if you are trying to CREATE a HomeGroup) Turning on these services worked instantly for me. I hope this helps some of you as I didn't see this solution posted anywhere.
