Cannot connect to network computers and files
Hello,I have a home network with two laptops, both running windows vista home premium sp1 and one desktop computer running windows xp proffesional sp3. I'm having various problems with the network each stated below1. Neither the desktop or laptop #2 can connect consistently to laptop #1. Error messages such as: cannot connect to the DNS, network path does not exist and cannot communicate with laptop #1: the remote host was pinged and no response was recieved are displayed. On some occasions it is possible to connect to this laptop but not for prolonged amounts of time.2. The shared files on laptop #1 are not accesible (besides the public folder) via the network. Error messages such as: error 0x80070005: the network path does not exist and your account does not have permission to access this file are recieved.3. Laptop #2 cannot consistently connect to the desktop's printer and while browsing the desktop's shared files the browser often freezes and an error message is recievedI have tried for so long to fix this problem but have never fully succeeded. I have tried disabling all firewalls and antivirus programs on all the network computers but still no change. Please help I'd love this problem to be fixed and it is especially important for laptop #1 to be able to access the desktop's printer at all times for important business purposes. As for the internet connecting, all computers can connect to it at all times with no problems whatsoever as it is uplinked through the router and not through a shared connection on a pc.Kind Regards

Ensure that you can ping that laptop #1 from other computers, if not there is network configuration problem on that laptop #1. You can type ipconfig /all in command prompt (cmd.exe) and check whether it displays correct IP, netmask, gateway and DNS info. If you suspect it's driver problem, go to manufacturer website and download the latest wireless adapter driver, uninstall the old one and install the new one, finally test again. Once you can ping laptop #1 from other computers without problem, you can take a look on simple file sharing, password protected file sharing and printer sharing in Vista articles to help you more.

Your suggested answer really doesn't help at all. I've had the same problem for weeks and STILL cannot connect to an XP machine from a Vista laptop. This is defintely not a driver issue. The thing that really ticks me off is the fact that I'm able to ping the XP machine just fine. I'm able to RDP to the XP machine just fine. I have shares set up on the XP machine. I have NAS set up on my network connected to my router and I'm able to see that just fine. I can see the Vista laptop from the XP machine just fine.I have both firewalls disabled on my two machines. I should not have to disable firewalls on my network. The whole point of a firewall is to protect my environment, and when Microsoft's "solution" is to disable all firewalls, that's riduculous.I don not know WHY networking with Vista has to be som absolutely impossible.
