Cannot communicate with Primary DNS Server
My internet works perfect at home (sort of). I have a brand new Sony SZ ABGN wifi enabled laptop, Vista 32 bit installed. Everytime I connect at home for one I have to get new ip settings otherwise it will not let me browse beyond my network connection. Second everytime I bring my laptop to work to get on our open access wifi (with an excellent signal) it connects to the network itself but doesn't reach internet access. However, my much older Windows XP laptop does. Can someone help me with my wifi settings? Thanks all. Below are my IPCONFIG/ALL settings, if there is anymore info I need to provide let me know. I can live with getting new IP settings everytime I am at home, I would really like to be able to log on to the wifi at work and do my homework though.
Thanks,
David

Hi David,
Before moving on, please let me know whether the IP result is when you at home. However, could you please post the IP result when you at another location?
Then, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles to troubleshoot the problem.
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
On a Windows Vista-based client computer, you cannot obtain an IP address or options from the DHCP server
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942971/en-us
Thanks.

I'll post when I am at home but it still doesn't work after trying those two solutions on your post. That information was obtained from my work location (hospital). We have free wifi for our patients and staff, everyons laptop except my new one will work and it was the most expensive (go figure)! It connects now but still doesn't allow internet access like my Windows XP laptop does.
Thanks,
I'll reply asap I get home in a few hours.

I've had a stressful week of finals and totally forgot that it was not working. No but will update when I get home. So sorry, I get off work in about 3 hours and will post my results about an hour after that (it's a long drive home ). Thanks for being patient and helpful. Someone suggested something to me on another forum, I tested it and will tell you what it is, I can't however conclude that it works. I have yet to go to school or work with the new settings, I think I removed the 'IP Helper Service' and the 'IPv6' due to them possibly conflicting with non Vista routers. Who knows, I'll post when I get home though. Sorry agian.
David

Hi,
Thank you for your updating.
I checked both IP CONFIG results on home and work place.
I noticed the following message from your work place IP CONFIG result.
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 1.1.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.11.1
I suspect the problem is caused by DHCP Server address, could you please help me confirm it?
1.Click Start, type CMD in Start Search bar and press enter.
2.Run the following command:
Ping www.microsoft.com
Does the URL can be resolved? If not, please let me know.
In addition, if possible, could you please manually assign a DNS address to the computer and test the network issue?
Thanks.
