Cannot close, move or minimize any window
After a recent reboot of my system, I cannot move, minimize or close any new window that I open. In fact, the "x" in the upper RH corner of each Explorer window is grayed out. For other applications, like Internet Explorer, I get the mouse-over color change to maximize, minimize or move - but again, no action. Right-clicking on the window in the Task Bar does not bring up the usual context menu that would provide another way to close or minimize the window.I have conducted a PC-Cillin virus scan to no avail; starting in Safe Mode exhibits the same behavior.Any guidance would be appreciated.Regards,Andrew

Hi,I noticed you performed a full scan of your computer, did you try this in safe mode?If not, please scan the whole computer again in safe mode. Also, Please download and run Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool to check whether your computer is infected by specific, prevalent malicious software.Download details: Windows Malicious Software Removal Toolhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356--------------------Regards,Eric Zhang

Hi, I am having the same problem as the previous poster. I have performed a full scan in safe mode. And I have downloaded the Windows Software Removal Tool and run it. I keep being told I have no malicious software on my computer. Along with this inability to move, close or minimize my windows, I also get error messages when opening up certain programs, such as Freecell or Itunes. Thewindows says: "program".exe is a corrupt file and to run the chkdsk utility. Also, when attempting to open the Microsoft Management Console I am informed that my computer 'could not create a blank document'. All of these problems began after I ran a recent Windows update and had to restart my computer. I attempted restoring my computer to before I updated and it would not allow me to. I tried uninstalling these windows updates but I could not remove KB938371. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix any or all of these problems? Thank you in advance, Erin

I am having the exact same problem after installing KB938371 and cannot restore to a previous date to correct the problem. I have scanned in safe mode and normal mode with both the Windows Software Removal tool and McAfee Security Suite with nothing found. This is a very annoying problem...any suggestions?

I have tried all of the suggestions and still can not close or minimize windows. They are just stacking on top of each other

Okay I don't know if this has been suggested on here yetbut it worked for me. I had/have this same problem but it only came up when I ran a startup repair. I went searching all over to find a fix to it and tried a bunch of things, none worked. FInally, I found a forum where someone suggested to reinstall the Windows Service Pack 1 update and so I tried it.I uninstalled it andIt worked. Then, I reinstalled the update and now none of the windows close or resize again. I suspect it has something to do with a conflict between the service pack and something else. Anyway, uninstalling the SP1 did the trick for me, but I'm not sure what you lose with it, so use it at your own discretion.

After re-installing a ghost image of my vista install, this problem appeared for me too. No way to close, resize or otherwise manipulate any wexplorer windows. I had previously been running sp1 for at least a month with no problem. After the ghost install, I needed to run windows install disk to repair the mbr (I think that was the problem). The system now booted normally but the window problem appeared. I followed the advice to uninstall sp1 and this has fixed the problem. It seems problematic though to write off sp1 permanentely. Has anyone been able to get sp1 working again after this issue?

I had the same problem. Replacing the user32.dll.mui file fixed it. Replace the file with another one and reboot.Go to C:\Windows\System32\en-US and search for user32.dll.muiThe file may have other similiar files such as user32.dll.mui.bak that you can use to replace it. The backup file didn't work for me and I had to use the user32.dll.mui file from another computer running Vista. I had no trouble renaming the file and replacing it with a new copy, however if it does refuseto let you, you will have to take ownership first. This site shows how to do that. www.mydigitallife.info/2007/05/25/how-to-take-ownership-and-grant-permissions-in-windows-vista/
