Cannot change user password - wrong password
Hello, When I try to change my password, I get a message that my username and/or password is not correct. Same thing when trying to createa password reset disk. I also get the same message when logging on after hibernating. Clicking the Switch User button, selecting the same user, and providing the same password allows me to log on. When logging on after a full shutdown, I do not have that problem. I'm sure that caps-lock is off, that I use the correct upper/lower cases for my password (given I can log on after having clicked "switch user"). I'm using Vista Business edition (32bit), version 6 - pre-installed on a Dell Precision. My keyboard setting is Belgian(Period). Any suggestions? Kind regards, Steven D.

Hi, Steven, Are you using a German version of Windows Vista? In this scenario, please read the following article and download the hotfix to resolve this problem. Error message when a domain user tries to change the password of a client computer that is running the German version of Windows Vista: "Status: C000006C/C000006C"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936460/en-us If the above is not your scenario, are you using a domain user after you remove the computer from the domain? Or are you using an account name that contains an "@" sign? For your reference, please read the following KB articles. You cannot log on after you remove the computer from the domainhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/317049/en-us Error message when you try to log on by using an account name that contains an "at" sign (@): "The system could not log you on"http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925634/en-us Hope it helps.

Thanks for the reply, But I'm not using a German version. And I use a stand-alone PC. I'm not aware that I'm part of a domain. My usernamen does not contain an @ sign <Sigh> Regards, Steven

Hi, Does this issue occur with all users or only one paticular user? Is there any error logged in system logs? If yes, please post the event here. You can also try to repair your computer by following these steps. 1. Start the computer by using the Windows Vista DVD. To do this, insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive, and then restart the computer. Note: To start the computer from the Windows Vista DVD, the computer must be configured to start from the DVD drive. For more information about how to configure the computer to start from the DVD drive, see the documentation that is included with the computer, or contact the computer manufacturer. 2. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on the screen, press a key. 3. After selecting the language, please click Repair your computer. 4. Click Windows Complete PC Restore. 5. Please select the backup you would like to restore. 6. Click Finish. Thanks.

Hello Yog Li, Thanks for the answer. Sorry for the late response. I do want the problem solved, but it is currently not a blocking factor - so I'm focussing on my business most of the time... It does not occur with my admin account - but then I don't dare to use a complex password there. I did not yet create a new userto test it that way. Will do it if I have some more time if you think this could clarify. I checked some logs, but I'm not sure where to look really and what to look for. Could you please give me some more guidance in that area. As for the repair. Given that this occurred from the moment I got my laptop, I do not have a backup which worked correctly so a restore will not help me. Kind regards, Steven

Same problem on MS Vista Ultimate SP1 on acer aspire 5520g. Can't logon after sleep or hibernation. Have to press switch user button to logon. When I created second user I can't logon with it at all. There is no info in security log about second user logon failure.

Hello all, Meanwhile I found what was wrong with my install: multiple keyboards/languages were installed. For one or another reason my default keyboard during sessions was not the one initially loaded. I removed the originally installed keyboard and only kept my preferred one. This solved the problem for me. Kind regards, Steven

This is not solution for me. I've created simple numeric password like 1234. Also I've create 2 more users with admin rights. I can login only with first user which was create during windows install. With 2 other users I have wrong password message. I have the same issue on my home pc. What is strange that there is no info in security log about login failure.

Hi, I found1 interesting thing for this trouble. Don't know how it is made on yours vista, butI got two languages enabled: English and Lithuanian. My password contains letters AND number keysfrom the top of the keyboard. Our missing Lithuanian letters are placed at the same location as the uppernumber keys. So then i type mypassword I use those numberkeys. SoI am telling that Vista got a mistake: The languages are mixed in logon screen. Try choosing different language. Sorry for my English, hope you understand.
