Cannot associate .snp files to Snapshot Viewer

I have a user on a Surface Pro running Windows 8.1 Pro.  We installed the MS Snapshot Viewer because he has been getting .snp files from one of our customers.

When he opens a .snp file, it tries to open the file in Adobe Acrobat.  So I remote controlled his computer, right clicked on the .snp file and chose Open With > Choose Default Program.  I then click on More Options since Snapshot Viewer isn't listed and then scroll down to Look for another App on this PC.  I go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Snapshot Viewer and select Snapview.exe.  Instead of opening the file in Snapshot Viewer, I get an error that I cannot associate that file type to the program.

The work around he has to do is open Snapshot Viewer, click File > Open and then go to the folder that contains the .snp file.  While this will open the .snp file for him to view it, it is not an efficient way for him to do his job.  How do I solve this issue so that when he double clicks the .snp file, it'll launch Snapview.exe???

Hi Parrothead72,

Try another type file and change association see if this issue occurs.

If this issue doesnt occur on other type of file, follow the steps below:

1. Type "regedit" in the Run line or from an elevated CMD prompt.

2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications and find your .exe name.

3. Navigate under its name to shell>open>command.

4. Under Default, make sure the application location points to the actual location of the executable.

5. Press OK and then try and reassociate the file type as you normally would.
