Cannot access the internet
Good Afternoon,This question is regarding the inability to access the internet. We have a Dell PC and are using Windows XP. Last Saturday while not logged on to the internet, I noticed a window came up that looked like something from Microsoft. I cannot recall the exact message but it looked like a security update. I clicked ok and we are now not able to access the internet. Since then, we have downloaded and run Norton 360 and Malwarebytes anti-malware software with no success. When I do a diagnostic test, I see the message "Network Adapter Identification Error. Then a number 0x80070422." Not sure if this makes a difference. Can you please assist with this. Could our modem be bad? Thanks in advance!Regards,-Tony1 person needs an answerI do too

If you find an "Error," double-click on it and then click on the"copy" icon just below the up/down arrows. Paste the result into yournext post. Do this for all errors going back to the date/time when you first observed your issue.d. Close any open "Event properties" windows and go back and double-click on "System" in the left-hand pane. Scroll down and look forerrors. If any errors are found, repeat step c.e. Close the Event Viewer 4. a. Right click "My computer" and select properties.b. Select the "Hardware" tab and then click on Device Manager.c. Scroll down to "Network adapters." Is there a yellow (!) next tothis entry?d. Ok Lem, I'm at work now and will try this when I get home.I connect to the internect via DSL using an ethernet cable and router. The router works so does the ethernet cable, I tested it with my work laptop computer and it worked fine.

With respect to the Event Viewer issue:- Start > Run- type "services.msc" (without quotes) then click OK- Scroll down to "Event Viewer" double click on it and and make theStartup type Automatic from the drop down box. Click Apply. Also click on the Start button to start the service. Click OK. With respect to the network adapter, try the following: A. The "update from Microsoft" may have been a bad driver for the network adapter, so ...1. In Device Manager, double-click the entry for your network adapter and click the Driver tab2. Click the "Roll back driver" button "Roll back driver" doesn't always work. Sometimes, there is no previousdriver to roll back to. B. If rolling back the driver doesn't help, then 1. In Device Manager, right-click on the entry for your network adapter and select "Uninstall."2. Reboot and let Windows detect the adapter and install it. After either A or B, go to Network Connections, right-click the icon for your Local Area Connection and select Properties. On the General tab, under the heading "This connection uses the following items" should be 4 entries:- Client for Microsoft Networks- QoS Packet Scheduler- File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks- Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) If any of these items are missing, click the Install button and add them. If you don't want to share files and printers among your own computers, you don't need to have File and Printer sharing. If you have anything other than those 4 items, particularly TCP/IP v.6, Uninstall them. Highlight the entry for Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button. On the General tab, ensure that the radio buttons to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. Click the Advanced button at the bottom. Click the WINS tab and ensure that the radio button to Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is selected.OK your way out. Reboot. How are things working now? -- Lem
