Cannot access domain file shares from Windows 8.1

Hello. I have a Surface Pro running Windows 8.1. At home I have a Windows domain network. I do not want to put my Surface on my domain, but I do want to access file shares and printers on my domain network. If I open Windows Exporer and navigate to \\servername, I can see all the printers and file shares. However, if click on any of them I get a "Network Error" dialog that says I do not have permissions to access the share. I would expect to see a login dialog where I can enter my domain account.

I've tried every thing I can think if. Turned on file sharing/discovery for all network types, disabled Windows Firewall, etc. I've tried using "net use" from the command line to login, mapping one of the shares as a drive, set my WiFi network connection to Private. Nothing works.

I've been using Windows machines for 20 years and this is the first time I've had this situation. If I bring my Windows 8.1 laptop home from work (which is on my work domain, not my home domain) I can navigate to and login to my home domain resources no problem....I just have to enter my credentials.

Does anyone have any ideas why this machine is behaving different? What do I need to do to get this to work? Thanks.

Network and Sharing Center, Internet/Connections, Wireless Properties - Security - Advanced Settings - Specify authentication mode, change Authentication mode to Computer instead of user

After that you should able to enter the credential to access domain share files using local user (non-domain)

The screen shot is from my Surface Pro. The account I use on my Surface is a Microsoft Account, which belongs to the local Administrators group on the device. I've also logged in as the local Administrator account, but it made no difference...I get the same empty dialog in the screenshot when going to the Advanced Settings.

I seriously can't believe that this so difficult.

Any thoughts why I don't have those options on my Surface?

try to enter the fully qualified domain name like your-domain.Local or disable the Firewall temporarily. Click OK button, restart your tablet and select Other user to enter your domain credentials.

or there is other workaround if you cant find that Authentication mode, buy the USB to NIC card

If you want further investigation I suggest contact Surface forum

What happens if you explicitly define credentials in Credential Manager for the share? Be sure to use domain\user to specify that the account belongs to the domain.
