Cannot access Windows 7 shared folder from Linux box, logon failed
I have a media player box (Mvix Ultio) running embedded Linux. It is supposed to be able to access shared folders in Windows. It worked flawlessly with Windows Vista Ultimate. However, it is unable to access shared folders on Windows 7 Ultimate machine. From the Linux box, I could see the Windows 7 machine on the network. Selecting the Win7 machine, it asks for user credential. I put in the user credential of a user account created on the Win7 machine, as I successfully did with Vista before, it complains that logon failed. So I cannot proceed to see the shared folders from Win7. When accessing the Win7 machine from another Win7 machine belonging to the same workgroup, there is no problem. When accessing the Win7 machine from a Vista machine that belongs to a different domain, but connected to the same home network, it asked for user credential. I put in the same user credential as I didon the Linux box (that of a user account on the Win7 machine), there is no problem. I can access the Win7 shared resourced from the Vista machine. My network is home network in workgroup mode. The Linux box can logon to Vista machine connected to the same network, regardless of whether the Vista machine belongs to the same workgroup or a different domain.Win7 Ultimate RTM settings:Network discovery: turned onFile and printer sharing: turned onPublic folder sharing: turned onMedia streaming: offFile sharing connection: tried both 128-bit encryptionand 40- or 56- bit. Both not workingPassword protected sharing: tried both enabled and disabled. Both not workingHomeGroup connections: allow Windows to manage. Also tried to disable HomeGroup completely (by stopping and disabling both the HomeGroup client and server services), still doesn't work. (I now keep those services disabled since it otherwise completely messed up with access rights I setup for different folders that I want other people to have, locally and remotely.)Shared folders on the Win7 machine give Everyone read access.Tried the method described in http://www.tweaktown.com/news/13274/cinematube_now_works_with_windows_7/index.html. Still no go.Tried enabling network security auditing, etc, no entries were found in event logs. Please advise what I did wrong or where else I should be looking at.Thanks.

Please check related policies. 1. Enter gpedit.msc in the Start Search box. 2. Open Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Settings.3. In the right pane, enable the following policies: Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translationNetwork access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users Also please disable the following policies. Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and SharesNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accountsNetwork access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares Change the following policy:Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Change the value to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. If the issue persists, change the Kerberos encryption type. 1. Open gpedit.msc. 2. Find the policy Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options ->Network Security: Configure encryption types allowed for Kerberos 3. Configure the policy. If it is not configured, actually both DES cipher suites are disabled. I suggest that you enable all the suits. Then please check the result.Arthur Xie - MSFT

When entering the user name and password please use the following format. [Windows 7 computer name]\[user name]password Also please check if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on Windows 7 computer. If the issue persists, please let us know if you can access the Windows 7 computer by using IP address, but not from the NetBIOS name. You can monitor the network traces by trying Network Monitor. 1) Install and Launch NetMon3.3 in Windows 7.2) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab 3) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.4) Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon.5) Access the Windows 7 computer from the Linux box. 6) Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. You may choose only query the connections via the Linux box and Windows 7 computer from the left pane. Then, in the right pane, select the end parts including the authentication process (log on process), copy and paste into your post.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Following are the captured frames, where AMD-PC (192.168.0.20) is the Win7 PC, and 192.168.0.21 is the Linux box. All IPs are dynamic, assigned by the router.I don't see how to paste the frame data here or attach a file here. So here is the link to the captured cap file: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/142918/Linux.capI tried using [Windows 7 computer name]\[user name] before and by using the IP address before. Hello Didu,Please follow the below steps to resolve the issue also added one more line to Arthur Xie steps...Open Windows 7 Local Group Policy or Local security policy -> Goto Computer configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings-> Security Settings -> Local Policies-> Security Options -> and right hand side select Send unencrypted password to connect to third-party SMB servers and enable this policy. After enabling this policy just update group policy by below command gpupdate /force then if you will try to access Linux machine from Windows 7 it will access without any issue.I was also facing this issue but after enabling this policy i was able to access my linux mchine from windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2.Cheers,Subhash Tiwari |MCA|MCSE|MCSA|MCDBA|MCTS | Blog-> http://subhashtiwari.spaces.live.com

You can't access local group policy or local security policy in windows 7 home premium or starter editions. I would like to know how us people that have OEM systems can get these linux players working? (Other than upgrading to a higher version of windows 7, before some genius says that!)

Dumb down windows.1. Launch regedit from Start Search box.2. Find the following branch. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Create a DWORD key under Lsa and set: Name: LmCompatibilityLevel Value: 1 4. Restart.Or smarten up linux

I also have a player a zp-500. I could access a w7 share, but setting null to anonymous and anonymous to read only. But I would like to provide a user/pass. How it worked in xp, it asked for the pass before listing the shared folders. In w7 and above configs, it let anonymous access to listing the shared folders, and when entering the folder he asks for a pass. I would like to make it work like it did in the xp, because the player, only permits save "whole computer" passwords, not "sharing only" passwords. any ideas?

I've just got a new PC with W7 Ultimate and I'm having similar problems. My HDD media player used to be able to transfer files just fine under XP, but with W7 the player asks for a username and password and I have tried all permutations. The player can still see and log on successfully to the PC with all our music in the living room and to my laptop (no password required), both are still on XP. I've tried to do all the changes suggested in these posts but to no avail. I must have missed something. Would somebody be able to give me a bit of an idiot's step-by-step guide from start to finish of what I need to do?Thanks.Peter of Perth, Western Australia

Open Windows 7 Local Group Policy or Local security policy -> Goto Computer configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings-> Security Settings -> Local Policies-> Security Options -> and right hand side select Send unencrypted password to connect to third-party SMB servers and enable this policy. After enabling this policy just update group policy by below command gpupdate /force then if you will try to access Linux machine from Windows 7 it will access without any issue. I can't seem to manipulate group policy in Win 7. I can't get to the "starting point". Is this possible in OEM Home Premium edition? I'll keep plugging away, but this has stumped me. Any details you might have would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have the group policy UI in Home editions. You will have to manipulate the registry settings directly for those that actually applies to Home editions. I have Ultimate version, but still can't get it to work no matter what policies I changed based on the suggestions in this thread or anything I could find on the net.MS support asked for my net traffic log, which I posted earlier. Never heard from them since.

Also, are you using the same user ID and password from Vista that you do with Win7? I kept mine the same from Vista to Win7, but can't help but think if I should be using another log in user id on Mvix. I've "dumb down" Win7 in the registry with the instructions provided above and I know I've upgraded the firmware on Mvix to 2.12. Something very simple I must be doing wrong...
March 29th, 2010 5:40am

Yes, MX-800HD is Ultio. Same thing. I downloaded the firmware from www.mvixusa.com. I don't think it matters if the user ID and password are the same or not from Vista to Win7. I have multiple accounts on the PC and I tried all of them before. (I should try to access another Win7 machine. Will do next time.) Every time after I tried any registry/local_policy changes before without success, I changed them back. So my Win7 box now has the same settings as default after a fresh install. Besides, after a firmware upgrade, you lose all the settings on the Ultio anyway. So any saved credentials would be gone on the Ultio. Now I have a new problem: Samba server won't start on the Ultio so I can't access it from the PC. I know there is instruction to change the path on 2.1x, but I can't telnet to it to make the change. Telnet connection fails. After all, I'm not sure if they actually fixed it in the firmware or I just got lucky.

Got a virus that scared me enough to reinstall Win 7. I have an Ultio Pro (880) now and I'm able to see my PC and shared folders over the network, but I can't see the files inside the folders. I know the video format is supported, so it has to be a sharing issue. It's across the board on all folders. Folders, but no files. What am I missing? I'm browsing other sites on Ultio issues like this. Just thought I would post here since it's similar to the log in issue.

This is an incredible state of affairs. I have followed each of the instructions listed above and I still cannot access my Windows 7 64 system from my Ubuntu 10.10 machine. I am on the same Workgroup. I use my own ID and password to sign in and they are always rejected. I have tried to turn off the Network password instruction, but I cannot. I know the basics are there, because my Windows 7 system can see shared folders on the Ubuntu box. But I cannot get the reverse to work...all I ever get is that damned demand for an User ID, Domain and Password. And then the #@$@SW things fails and requests another PW. This is beyond belief! And by their silence, perhaps is it beyond the Softies to solve, either. Perhaps it is time to abandon Windows for good!

Hi dude, I think this will defiantly help you. It will remove all the login restriction to access window share. First, click on “Start”. Type the command: –>regedit … and execute it. Look for and modify these parameters as the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa On the right side find ‘everyoneincludesanonymous’; change the value to 1 Find ‘NoLmHash’ and change the value to 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters ‘restrictnullsessaccess’; change the value to 0 Close the registry editor and restart the computer. Restart your CinemaTube as well using your remote control. Reference: http://www.tweaktown.com/news/13274/cinematube_now_works_with_windows_7/index.html

Arthur, You have tried to be very helpful and very polite and patient. I have tried all you have suggested but to no avail. There does come a time when we all have to admit that what we are dealing with is a complete lash-up that is causing grief worldwide. Windows XP file sharing worked fine. Windows 7 is a joke in this respect. Directories have been redirected and permissions denied. Home groups and the network settings require a level of knowledge that only day to day professionals have. In fact to get to network settings in the first place is a trick in itself. Why MS have to take a good thing and crucify it? Marketing influence, I suspect. I don't expect this response to affect things at all but I feel better having written it. I have been a MS devotee for 20 odd years now but it's Opensuse Linux for me from now on - free, no promises, it all works, no grief. Many thanks for trying to help but delving into group policies and registry hacks is not the way forward. Oh, and by the way, thanks, MS for 'the Ribbon' - a nightmare for the occasional user. Another good thing ruined. But Arthur - none of this is your burden, you tried very hard to help, and thanks. Regards. John

Thank you Danish Zahur for posting your answer. This is the only response that helped solve my issue.
