Cannot access Windows 7 machine from another windows 7 machine.
Ok so here is the scenario: 3 new machines came in for prepping, and all three of them where replacing old pc's. Now on all three I used the Easy Transfer Wizard from Windows 7 to transfer files from the old XP machines to the Windows 7 machines(which works quite well, took everything, including the background i might add). Now when it was installed i setup the network on DCHP and they can all access internet which tells me that from pc to router to ISP there is no problem. Now the problem: When I try to access the other Windows 7 machines I get: "The user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer" This is misleading, because "this computer" can mean the targeted computer, or the computer I am currently working on. Could someone please clear that up for me. Couple of things I've tried: Changed Username - This worked once on a XP to Windows 7 machine but doesnt work now as chnaging the username only edits its "Full Name" catagory and not the acual username(alias?). Tried static IP addresses but I doubt that that was the problem so I changed it back. I tried adding the user of these computers to the Local Policy > User Rights Assignment > Access this computer from the Network DB but i get an error while attempting that. I have tried Password Protected sharing both on and off. Network discovery is on but sometimes not all of them show. Windows Diagnostics gives me a "Allow a program through the firewall" solution, but I turned it off completely on all three machines, and ive checked, File and Printer sharing is ticked on the allowed programs. Something odd: I changed the Computername of the one PC to its old name and suddenly it can access the 2 other new machines, however they cant her, which leads me to believe that the problem exists on everyone of the new computers. Any help or more information you require please feel free to ask as I really want to know whats causing this. Hi, What is the error message when trying to configure Access this computer from the Network settings? Are there any computer in domain? I suspect the issue is related to your profiles. Please add the user into Administrators group to check the result. (Click Start -> right click Computer -> Manager -> Local User and Group -> Group -> Administrators -> add the user) If it doesn't work, please enable Guest account on that computer. If the issue persists, you could create a new user account with administrator privileges for testing. Best Regards, NikiPlease remember to click "Mark as Answer" on the post that helps you, and to click "Unmark as Answer" if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hello Niki Han Thank you for your reply. unfortunately neither of your suggestions proved to be the solution. The Guest account gave the same error, and as for the Administrations group suggestion, they were all already in the administrators group. Did you perhaps mean to re-add them? I also tried adding the exact account name of the person that cannot access the pc to the inaccessable pc with no luckGive a man a fire and he is warm for a day, set a man on fire, and he is warm for the rest of his life

Click Start->right-click Computer->select properties review that each computer is a member of the same "workgroup" Click Start->select Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings... this is in the left pane Review the settings... check File sharing settings for encryption-perhaps the router or a device can't handle 128-bit Check password protected... is it on? off? Generally, if you do not have a user profile on each computer you will only see Public and specifically shared files. Also, in the Network and Sharing Center main page, click on the see full map to confirm that all of the computers and devices are recognized. Some switches won't work properly. Confirm that the router firmware is current and up to date. Shutdown all computers, reboot the router and then the computers. No general answer for this issue as each Network has it's own traits\hardware\etc.. If there is a server in the mix, that makes it more interesting.

Nano Warp: Thanks for the suggestions above and I've followed each one, but still no dice I can see all the computers under Network...I can click open the XP machine but not the Win 7 machines. It gives a "Windows cannot access\\(computer name)" error message. I just bought a wireless printer and it is having the same issue. The printer is added to the network with a valid IP address but the computer cannot find it. I have IP addresses for all the computers and the printer and I can only ping the XP machine but not the Win 7 machines, the printer or the MacBook. All these machines show up in the DHCP Client Table on the Router with IP and MAC addresses. They just cannot communicate with each other, except for the XP machine. I have also added all these machines in the Trusted Zone under Norton Security...still not working. I have also tried to disable all firewalls (Norton and Windows) but nothing changed. I have searched everywhere online and this seems to be a common problem....no solution yet for me! :(

Hi, I suggest modifying the hosts files under C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923947 Add the IP address and its corresponding computer name. For example, on computer A, add computer B and C, and vice versa. After that, try to ping each other. Best Regards, L.S
