Cannot access Win7 shares from XP using username/password?
I read and followed the directions in this thread... "How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing." I created 3 shares on my Win7 box and would like to access them, from my XP box, using UserName/Password authentication I tried these... directly connecting to \\<win7 box name>\<share> directly connecting to \\<win7 box name>\ Mapping a drive in Explorer ... in all cases I'm prompted for UserName/Password but it will not accept anything I type in. There are 2 admin users on the Win7 box and have tried both to connect to the shares. ... one of the admins is actually the same user/pw I have on the XP box and it still does not work. How can I get this to work?

Hi, Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Turn on Guest account on Windows 7 PC for a test. 2. Launch "Network and Sharing Center" on Windows 7 PC and click "Change advanced sharing settings" in the left panel. In the current profile, please select "Turn off password protected sharing" option and click "Save changes" button. 3. Please right click the shared folder on Windows 7 PC and click Properties. Then add "Everyone" permission in Security tab. 4. Disable simple file sharing on Windows XP machine. a. Click "Start" -> "Run", type "control folders" (without quotation marks) and press "OK". b. Switch to "View" tab. c. Clear the check box of "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" option and then press "OK" to exit. What's the result? If issue still occurs, please transfer a large file and perform following steps to capture a log file. Collect the Netmon trace on Windows XP machine ========================= a. Download NetMon3.3 from the following website and install it on the computer http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f b. Launch NetMon3.3. c. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 window, click Create a new capture tab … d. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. e. Then, switch to Network Monitor, press F5 to start NetMon. f. Try to access the network shared folder again. When it failed, go to step g. g. Go back to the NetMon window and press F7 to stop the NetMon. h. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file named test. Then please upload to SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) and share the link to me. Thanks, Novak
