Cannot access Shared folders and printers in office network from W7 HP. Office machines are all XP pro.
Hi, I have bought a new laptop with Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I am facing problem in accessing the shared folders in my office domain. I can acess the LAN, IP printers & Remote Desktop. But not able to access the shared printers and folders. All other computers are with widows XP. Can I access them without upgradigng to pro version? I don't want to join the Domain.

Hi, First, please let me know the exact error which you received. Does the account have enough privilege to access the resources in this domain? Please access the shared folder and printer with you domain account to test. If it still failed to access the shared folders and printers, please try the following steps to test this issue: 1. Try to access the share folder by “\\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX<IP Address>” and see how it works. 2. Test the issue in Clean Boot. 3. Check if the other computers can connect with each other. 4. Create a new user account to test the issue. Hi, I tried step 1 and got the below mesage.. "\\.xx.xx.x.xxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."

I've got the exact same problem. Did the registry trick, removed remote decompression, basically tried all online suggestions and no luck. I ended up formatting the machine back to XP pro 64 bit and all is well. I wonder what microsoft plans to do about this cause it is a huge problem. If anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it. Thank you

Hi, You may try the following steps and check if that fixes the issue: 1. Adjust the security setting on the Windows 7 computer: 1) Click the Start Button, type "gpedit.msc" (without quotation marks) and click OK. 2) In the "Group Policy" window, double click on "Windows Settings" under "Computer Configuration". 3) Double click on "Security Settings"-> "Local Policies"-> "Security Options" 4) In the right panel, double click on the "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level", please select "Send LM & NTLM Responses". 5) Click Apply and OK. 2. Check the advanced sharing permission on the shared folder. Please give full permission to the folder. You may refer to the following link for Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP. Please Note: Since the website is not hosted by Microsoft, the link may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this information. All the above suggestions are not applicable for my OS " Win 7 Home premium". I think I have to either upgrade to W7 pro or downgrade to xp. Anytime upgrade is asking to download from microsoft store, which is not allowing my region, middle east. Windows xp pro is not available in market. I curse the time I bought my Laptop with this useless OS..

I had the same problem and I found this work around. Create a batch file with this line in it: net use \\XPHOST /u:DOMAIN\username password Where the DOMAIN username and password are valid for the XP host you want to access. Run this batch file once afer boot up on the windows 7 home premium PC. I originally had the same problem accessing domain joined XP machines from an XP home machine and this was also the solution.

If the “Access is denied” error is showing up on the computer, just go through the steps to fix the error. First, open the Printer Wizard through the Control Panel. Select the ‘Add printer Wizard’, then click ‘Add a local printer’ and then click ‘Create a new port’. Make sure that local port is there in the list and then click ‘Next’. In the Port name dialog box, type computer name and printer name and then click ‘Ok’. Complete the wizard steps to finish the process.Printer Support
