Cannot Start Windows Security Center Service

Both my Windows Update Service and Security Center Services were not running. I have run both Norton 360 and MalwareBytes full scans. I executed the MS Fixit for Windows Update, and I can see that the service is now running. I also tried to get the Security Center Service started, following the MS instructions...when I try to start the services I get an 1068 error...when I try to connect the computer name to the Logon tab of the Security Center Service, the message states that the computer name cannot be located! I also executed the MS Fixit for the Security Center Service, but no luck.

Any thoughts on what I can try next?

Hi,

Could you let us know the exact error message?

Generally, error 1068 means the dependency service or group failed to start.

So please disable all your antivirus software and firewall temporarily, and then check their common dependency component:

the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Please check if that Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service running fine.

Meanwhile, please run this "Fix it" to fix security center service issue:

Error message: Security Center service cannot be started

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519899

In addition, the Log On tab is as below, there is no computer name connect option as what you said. If I misunderstand, please correct me.

Steps taken so far to attempt to resolve Action Center red Flag regarding Security Service

  • Attempted to turn on within the Action Center message returned is : The Windows Security Center Service cant be started
  • Working from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519899
    • Ran up to date full Norton 360 visus scan- nothing detected except tracking cookies
    • Ran up to date full MalwareBytes virus scan - nothing detected
    • Ran MicrosoftFixit20084; returned FIXED
    • Located Services via Search
    • Navigated to Security Center
    • Attempted to Start Security Center Service
    • Received  Error 1068 the Dependency  Service or group failed to start
  • Disabled VirusSan
  • Disabled Firewall
  • Located Services via Search
  • Navigated to RPC Service
  • RPC Service shows Status of Running  and Startup of Automatic

Security Center Service properties when I look at Logon tab is what you show above. When I click browse I see:

This does reflect the correct computer name.

I did use the support KB to run the FixIt which got my Windows Update service running again, but the Security Center Service KB and FixIt are not correcting the problem of unable to start the Security Center Service.

What else can I do?
