I tried to add host to the Domain I got host unreachable, NowI am trying to establish a work group network at home with a Compaq Laptop with Dual cor proc and a desktop with a Quad core proc. *Both are 32 bit OS-YES *Cables connected -YES *Workgroup name- workgroup *Network connection says -unidentified network *Ping stats-host unreachable *Laptop IP 192.168.10.10/255.255.255.0 -Desktop- 192.168.10.20/255.255.255.0 Is there anything I forgot?Do I need to append IPs in the Host files? Any specific registries to be modified?

Are you able to ping it using IP Address and not host name. If not then the firewall on the other side might be blocking the connections and you should look at firewall configuration. If you can ping using IP, then the problem is with DNS configurations. Appending IP to Host file would work in this case, but better sapproach should be to check why name resolution is not successful by DNS and correct DNS settings. Hope this helps.

Hi CrDev, I tried both with Ip and hostname. AS far as I know in Windows 7 there are few things which I have to disable like: Automatic network discovery: ON Windows Firewall:OFF IPV6: OFF(uncheked) Since it is a Workgroup network , I did not enter any Gateway. Please suggest me what is the correct format of appending the host file ? Please note: Both are windows 7. The network connection says: Unidentified network (Seems it is in a network, anyway). Firewall for both hosts have been put off. Sudip EMC Storage AdminSudip Bhowmik

you can append the entry in host file as per format: <IP Address> <Hostname> For example 1.2.3.4 abc.com However if you are not able to ping with IP also, then DNS should not be a problem and appending the entry probably would not help you. Have you turned off the firewall for all profiles? Please note that stopping the firewall service is not the right way to turn it off, you should explicitly turn it off for each profile.
